Overview

After patrolling the galaxy, HAL JORDAN, a member of the GREEN LANTERN CORPS, streaks toward Earth. The neon lights of downtown Las Vegas guide the super hero toward his final destination. Then suddenly, the brightest city on the planet goes dark! Touching down, HAL spots the source of the black out . . . the brilliant but evil, DR. LIGHT! He'll stop at nothing to absorb all the light in the universe and become the most powerful super-villain ever created. HAL must put an end to this light king's reign, or it'll be lights out for him as well.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Hal Jordan is a member of the Green Lantern Corps and he is responsible for patrolling a space sector. On his way back to earth, Hal watches the lights go out in Las Vegas. What could have caused that disaster? As he races to the scene, he creates giant light bulbs with his magic ring to help the citizens stay out of danger. He then learns that one of his old enemies, Dr. Light, is responsible—they battle, but Dr. Light escapes. Hal now knows that he is fighting a crazy super-villain, but he really needs to turn his energy to restoring light to the city. It drains his ring, but readers learn how it is recharged and also the Green Lantern oath. It is a race to see if he can stop Dr. Light from gaining all the energy that he needs, including that from a nuclear explosion. Will our superhero win the battle to fight yet another day? The five chapters are full of action; on pages that only contain text, certain words are printed in a special font and color to break up what would be large sections of text. For example, on one spread, a reader would find "Crash!!" in big red letters and "Boom!" in big yellow letters. Full page illustrations appear in every chapter. The closing spread provides many details about the evil genius behind the attack and this is followed by brief biographies of the author and illustrator, a glossary, discussion questions and writing prompts. A book that may have appeal to reluctant male readers. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
