Overview

Some said she was an elegant seductress. Others swore she was an incestuous murderess. It didn’t matter what they called her. She was the most dangerous and sought-after woman in all of Rome. She was Lucrezia Borgia.

Born into Rome’s notorious Borgia family, young Lucrezia led a life colored by violence and betrayal. Now, married for the second time at just eighteen, she hopes for happiness with her handsome husband, Alfonso. But faced with brutal murder, she’s soon torn between her love for her husband and her devotion to her brother Cesare . . . And in the days when the Borgias ruled Italy, no one was safe from the long arm of their power. Even Lucrezia.

In this compelling story of a beautiful woman caught up in a tortuous web of fear and love, Jean Plaidy sheds light on the much maligned Lucrezia and vividly brings her to life.

    Terrible! Don't waste your time.

Not worthy of Jean Plaidy. I was bored with the characters. I kept waiting for SOMETHING to happen and it never did. The Tudor wives are MUCH more ineteresting and better written too. Don't waste your time or money.

    Good Read

The Borgias were an interesting family and I felt this book did a good job of telling Lucrezia's story. In my opinion, Lucrezia's character was too naive and I didn't quite understand her brother's obsession with her but I did enjoy reading it and would read more books from this author.

A woman dominated by ruthless Borgias.

In this first installment about Lucrezia Borgia's life, Plaidy writes about a woman who was born to Roderigo Borgia and Vannozza Catanei. Roderigo Borgia was descended from Spanish nobility. Therefore, the Borgias thought that they were better than everybody else. Their father treated Lucrezia and her three brothers in a very special manner. Some people remarked that Lucrezia and her family were unnaturally close. This relationship bordered on the incestuous. Lucrezia would often compare her husband to her father and brothers, much to her husband's disadvantage. Lucrezia was especially scared of her brother Cesare, even though she loved him. He was known during his day as being very cruel and violent. This relationship with Cesare would damage Lucrezia the most. He would deny Lucrezia happiness many times because of his jealousy. Cesare would also conspire to murder Lucrezia's husband. Furthermore, Cesare murdered his own brother, Giovanni. This was because he was jealous of Giovanni's royal position and they shared the same mistress (their brother Goffredo's wife). When Lucrezia finally falls in love, the reader has a sense that all might turn out right. However, her brother finds a way of ruining that too. An interesting and entertaining book.
