Overview

This book is renowned for being the book to own to understand lighting!

This is better than all the other how to books on the market which just provide set examples for photographers to follow. Light Science and Magic provides photographers with a comprehensive theory of the nature and principles of light to allow individual photographers to use lighting to express their own creativity. It will show you in-depth how to light the most difficult subjects such as surfaces, metal, glass, liquids, extremes (black-on-black and white-on-white), and people.

With more information specific for degital photographers, a brand new chapter on equipment, much more information on location lighting, and more on photographing people, you'll see why this is one of the only recommended books by www.strobist.com.

Light, Science & Magic 4th Edition by Fil Hunter, Steven Biver and Paul Fuqua - Focal Press

I have used the 3rd edition of this book when I teach. The 4th Edition improves on the earlier version and brings one "up-to-date." This is a text I'll continue to recommend.

The authors introduce the book with some basic information on the physics of light. If you really want to know the how and the why of lighting, this information is important. In my opinion, too often photographers know some basic lighting formulas such as for lighting portraits but they don't know why these formulas work. The why becomes very important when one encounters a situation that varies from the usual.

As everyone knows, a photographic image is two dimensional. The proper use of lighting is critical to provide an illusion of three dimensions. Another important facet of lighting is the avoidance of unwanted reflections, particularly when photographing a shiny object. Do you ever photograph a black object on a black background? How to do well in all of the preceding situations, and in many more, are explained.

This is a book that all photographers should have in their library.

    Good book, good service.

As described, the book makes you think. Not a "where to put your lights" book, but a book more about how to "see" light and begin to recognize how it will impact an image. Book was picked and shipped on time and came in perfect condition. Both book and B&N recommended!

    more from this reviewer

I have been on a search for a book about photographing lighting

I have been on a search for a book about photographing lighting for the past two years. I have bought many, but none has been as helpful as this book has so far. Most of the books I have merely show you how to set up lighting for portraits.

I am nearly through the entire book and it contains all the information you will need to understand how camera's "see" light. The authors explain the mathematical formula (to an extent) to help you understand why light acts the way it does. It is very helpful to have this information when you're learning how to set up lights.

This book is a must for any photographer and photo student. Another book I would recommend is Christopher Grey's Studio Lighting Techniques for Photographers.

This book didn't teach me anything new.  Rather, it put in words the things that you would learn about lighting from a few photoshoots.  As others have said, it teaches you how to think about light, but the same could be done by just playing around with a lighting kit and seeing what works for yourself.
