Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This book is number 60 in the "Nancy Drew Notebook" series which contains abbreviated mysteries designed for second or third grade girls who are just beginning to read chapter books. Since this series is aimed at younger readers than the original Nancy Drew book, it is appropriate that Nancy and her friends are only eight years old, and that they solve a very easy mystery involving finding the key to a lighthouse on the coast of Maine. Readers who are already Nancy Drew fans will find a comforting familiarity in this latest mystery. However, the plotline is somewhat confusing and may be hard for younger readers to follow. In addition, while the author attempts to portray a new girl, Megan, as mean-spirited, it is actually Nancy and her friends who seem to be the rude ones as they attempt to exclude Megan and repeatedly speak cattily about her behind her back. This may leave young readers confused as to what sort of behavior they should emulate. 2004, Aladdin Paperbacks/Simon and Schuster Children's Publishing, Ages 7 to 9.
