Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs
The Alden children and their grandfather are on their way home from visiting their aunt and uncle when they see a lighthouse. Upon further inspection, the family learns that the lighthouse is for rent, so they move in to stay for a while. The first night, everyone is sleeping, but at the stroke of midnight, their dog Watch begins to growl. They don't see anything and go back to sleep. The next night the same thing happens, but this time they see a lady walking toward the white house beside them. Further investigation is done by talking to the people in the town. While there, a man bumps in to one of the children and just keeps on going. They learn that he is an angry because his son wants to leave and go to college, and he wants him to stay home and work. They next night they see the lady again, but also see a boy that they think is the son of Mr. Cook. During their stay, Mr. Cook's son takes part in the Village dinner by being one of the chefs. His food is very different but delicious. When asked about his recipe, he keeps his recipe a secret. The mysteries of the lady, the boy going out at night, and what is in the recipe are all very satisfactorily answered. Graphic novels are a favorite of mine as they are perfect for a reluctant reader. They are also perfect for a struggling reader who will more than likely find success in reading this one. From the first to last page, the writing will hold the readers' interest. Both boys and girls will enjoy this story. It is a great book to be read over and over again. Reviewer: Kathie M. Josephs
