Overview

The funny, fast-paced second book in The Lightning Catcher series! Science, weather, and the fantastical combine for a school adventure story, part Storm Chasers and part Percy Jackson, about twelve-year-old Angus and his dangerous gift of predicting catastrophic weather.

Angus has a lot on his plate. He's attending the Perilous Exploratorium for Violent Weather and Vicious Storms, learning how to battle all sorts of extreme weather. He's a Storm Prophet—one of the rare people with the ability to predict catastrophic weather. His parents—world renowned Lightning Catchers themselves—have been kidnapped. And now Perilous has been slammed by a ferocious winter storm, artifacts from the Great Fire of 1666 have been stolen, and the evil Scabious Dankheart has released deadly spores called Ice Diamonds to plague the population. Angus and his friends must find the legendary Lightning Heart—a bloodred, heart-shaped stone of great power—in order to put everything right. Action-packed, lighthearted, and perfect for reluctant readers!

Praise for THE LIGHTNING CATCHER:“Mixing serious science with full-on fantasy.…With a motley collection of instructors, dangerous lightning dragons, a cinematic setting, and all manner of malevolent treachery, this fantastical adventure will find a wide audience.”
VOYA, June 2014 (Vol. 37, No. 2) - Sherry Rampey
In the second title in Cameron’s The Lightning Catcher series, Angus and his mischievous friends seek the remains of a tower that has recently been uncovered in London. However, they are not the only ones looking at these special remains and the power they may hold over the weather. With the addition of quirky new friends, Angus must again defeat Dankhart and figure out a way to save his parents from his enemies’ grasp. While the author’s attempt to incorporate science into fiction is laudable, the plot is unoriginal, analogous to the Harry Potter series; however, this could be the selling point of this novel. The uniqueness of the characters and their respective abilities may attract Harry Potter fans. References to what happened in the first installment can be found within the first couple chapters. Recommend this to middle graders who like adventure and fantasy, especially those who like the Harry Potter series. Reviewer: Sherry Rampey; Ages 11 to 14.

In this second of the Lightning Catcher series, storm prophet Angus McFangus returns to the Perilous Exploratorium for Violent Weather and Vicious Storms to solve a deadly mystery involving icicle storms, ice diamonds and an enigmatic lightning heart. While his parents remain prisoners of villainous Scabious Dankhart, 11-year-old Angus discovers he has an uncle, Jeremius, who specializes in Arctic weather. Jeremius has been ordered to return with Angus to Perilous, where they find the Exploratorium wrapped in a cold extreme even for its high altitude, with Dankhart as prime suspect. Reunited with chums Dougal and Indigo, Angus and his fellow lightning cubs engage in dangerous cold-weather survival classes while Angus tests his storm-prophet skills against holographic weather horrors. The winter weather nightmare escalates when Dankhart's clouds of lethal ice diamonds pelt Perilous. After deciphering a message warning him he must find the lightning heart in order to stop Dankhart, Angus knows what he must do, but he suspects it's bait laid to trap him. Reprising the successful formula of The Lightning Catcher (2013), Cameron again locates her engaging trio of best friends in the fantastical Perilous boarding school venue populated with a growing cast of bizarre characters and some truly horrific winter weather. Fans of Angus McFangus will applaud his latest weather-fantasy adventure. (Fantasy. 8-12)

Meet the Author

Anne Cameron got the original idea for the Lightning Catcher series after reading an article about fulgurites, which are formed when lightning strikes sand with such ferocity that it melts the particles together and forms amazing, rootlike glass tubes. What would happen, she wondered, if lightning bolts could be caught deliberately, by expert lightning catchers?

Anne Cameron lives in England.
