Overview

The sky blazes with incredible light as lightning flashes, brighter than ten million lightbulbs. Every second of every day more than a hundred lightning bolts strike the earth-millions of lightning bolts in a single day!

Readers will be fascinated by the spectacular full-color photographs and clear, concise text that explores one of nature's most dramatic phenomena. Award-winning author Seymour Simon investigates what we know about lightning, from how lightning and thunder form to a machine that can generate millions of volts of artificial lightning to staying safe if you're caught in a lightning storm. From Ben Franklin's famous kite experiment in 1752 to three new types of lightning recently discovered high above the clouds, this breathtaking photo essay reveals what we've learned in nearly two hundred and fifty years of studying lightning.

As in his other highly acclaimed books on natural disasters-Storms, Earthquakes, Volcanoes, and Wildfires- Seymour Simon introduces readers of all ages to one of the most dramatic wonders on earth.

Photographs and text explore the natural phenomenon of lightning.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 1-5A purple-hued cover photo attracts readers to this fascinating topic. The stunning, vibrantly colored photographs help to explain the text, illustrating points such as the differences between the three kinds of lightning. Short, simple sentences make this topic accessible to younger readers but do not talk down to older report writers. Simon emphasizes precautions about lightning for example, "If you are in water, get out as soon as possible". He also lists safe places to be if you are caught out in the open during a lightning storm. Libraries that own Stephen Kramer's Lightning Carolrhoda, 1992 or Jonathan Kahl's Thunderbolt Lerner, 1993 may not need an additional title covering similar material, but the outstanding photos make Simon's book a striking selection.Blair Christolon, Prince William Library, Manassas, VA

    Very Good

My six year old grandson is fasinated by the weather and he picked this one out himself. We have been reading it together, and although I have to explain some of it to him, he really is enjoying it. I've been learning things I either didn't know, or had forgotten about lightening.

Best book you can read over and over again.

This was my favorite book. I kept reading and re-reading it untill an unknown girl ruined it.
