Overview

The Mayan city of Quirigua was a ceremonial and trading centre for a largely rural population conveniently located at a crossroads between the southeastern Mayan highlands and the Peten heartland. It was not a large urban centre such as Tikal but it was well endowed with monuments and sculpture on a grand scale. Based on his thesis, Looper's study focuses on the city of Quirigua at the height of its power during the 8th century AD and in particular its most famous king K'ak' Tiliw. By analysing the monuments and sculpture attributed to this king, Looper investigates the relationship between politics, divine ancestry and spiritual power exploited by K'ak' Tiliw and other rulers. In doing so Looper offers 'important new insights into the politico-religious history of Quirigua and its ties to other Classic Maya centers, the role of kingship in Mayan society, and the development of Maya art.'

New Scientist
This is a strange and powerful story, based on impeccable scholarship, and compellingly told. It is one of the few academic books on the Maya that I would recommend to everyone.
