Overview

Tony Award winner and Broadway powerhouse Brian Stokes Mitchell brings star power to this treasury about Broadway — from audition and box office to marquee and understudy.  With an introduction by Mitchell, quotes from famous Broadway performers, and theatre facts and trivia, this is a must-have book for aspiring actors and theater fans of all ages.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Tony Award–winning actor Mitchell’s fittingly dramatic introduction ushers readers into the world of Broadway, inviting them to “be ignited by the incredible collaborative magic that gives life and light to the theater.” The theme of collaboration recurs throughout this alphabetical roundup of theatrical terms—A is for actor, O is for orchestra, U is for understudy—which spotlights the many roles that play a part in mounting a stage production. Other entries (improvisation, lights, rehearsal) address techniques or mechanics of the theater. Quotations from celebrated actors, producers, and other figures from the theater world (among them Nathan Lane, Billy Crudup, and Idina Menzel) add sparkle and insight to these busy pages, but there are also humdrum bits (“Every member of the audience needs a ticket in order to enter the theater and see the show”). Kreloff’s neon illustrations incorporate a range of display type and cartoon styles, and evoke the dazzle and buzz of Broadway. A CD featuring Mitchell singing an adaptation of “I Was Here” is included. Ages 8–up. (Nov.)
Children's Literature
From A for Audition and Actor (not to mention Audience and Applause) to Z for Zing, this alphabet book for theater-lovers covers Broadway from onstage to backstage and out front. Like the theater district it pictures in a double-page spread for B, each page is busy, busy, busy! The informative text is presented in floating sidebars along with bold illustrations in poster-bright colors, cramming the pages with flat images outlined off-center, giving the whole a look of excitement and energy that is almost too much. Some letters (like C for Costumes and O for Orchestra) take up a two-page spread, which works well, but sometimes adjacent letters, like two posters hanging too close, clash dissonantly. (Kids can probably handle that!) Several, such as K for Kickline and L for Lightsharmonize, in color and line provide a little rest for the eye. Q and X are always a test for alphabet formats; this one passes neatly with Quick Change (princess to bunny in five seconds) and X for Cross as noted in prompt books to record blocking. A wealth of theatrical lore and plenty of fascinating details combined with clever illustrations will keep aficionados absorbed or make an exuberant follow-up for a first-time theatergoer. Tony Award winner Brian Stokes Mitchell provides a lively introduction and a Postscript in the form of a poem. To complete the package, readers will find a CD of Mitchell singing I Was Here, adapted from a song in the musical, The Glorious Ones. Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft
School Library Journal
K-Gr 5—A love letter to Broadway written with genuine warmth and professional-theater knowledge, this alphabet book features crisp, retro-style cartoon characters confidently racing about onstage and behind the scenes. Pleasantly busy pages capture the excitement of live theater and offer multiple entries for each letter. For example, "A" is for "audition," "actor," "audience," and "applause." "S" stands for "stage," "scenery," "set," and "script." Multiple sidebars offer further kid-friendly definitions. Plenty of star power is lent with quotes from luminaries such as Whoopi Goldberg, Liza Minelli, Steven Sondheim, Bernadette Peters, Carol Channing, and Kevin Kline. A CD single written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty performed by Mitchell is also included. A must for all collections, this book will be treasured by theater aficionados for years to come.—Madigan McGillicuddy, Los Angeles Public Library

    Love This Book!!!

As a musician and theatre lover, this book is entertaining, amusing, factual, intelligent, fun, colorful and inventive. The CD is a bonus! For anyone at any age, this book has it all. Great eye-opener and teaching tool for those who have little or no musical/theatre/Broadway background. Thank you Harriet Ziefert & Elliot Kreloff!
