Overview

While most kids his age were playing sports, going to movies, watching television, or listening to music, Lil Wayne was planning his future. He knew what he wanted to do with his life, and it was never too early to start on his path to becoming a hip-hop legend.

What made him so determined to become a success? Lil Wayne tells the story of his determination-how he bothered record executives until they gave him a deal, his first successes as part of Hot Boys, and how he almost single-handedly put Dirty South rap on the music map.

It hasn't been all smooth sailing for the music star, and Lil Wayne tells that story too. Readers will also learn how he and other hip-hop stars came to the aid of the City of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Enid Portnoy
Listed among the twenty plus names in the series “Superstars of Hip-Hop,” Lil Wayne’s name is easily recognized. Growing up he was determined to make a name for himself in the music business. His mother was nineteen when he was born, and they lived near New Orleans, Louisiana. At twelve, he joined a school drama club and grew to love the stage and hip-hop. He loved words, the sound of them and their rhythm. He took every opportunity to display his talent and started a rap group at age twelve. He dropped out of school at fourteen to give all his time to rap. He started making mixtapes because he enjoyed making listeners pay attention to his new sounds and lyrics. He was very successful making albums but also spent some prolonged time in jail. While there, he still worked on his music. He never worried about what people thought about him but kept producing more and more successful recordings. He wanted to keep listening to his own dreams and his heart, and continues to do so. Colored photographs follow his musical career in this interesting life biography. A timeline, discography, list of films and albums, and further information sources have been included in the book. Turning the bad into good is another theme in his life story that young readers will appreciate and associate with Lil Wayne. Reviewer: Enid Portnoy; Ages 12 up.
