A scary, but not gory, story of healing and letting go of the past turning into a fight for your life. Swann is a master of build-up. Lilac Lane is one of those stories that has a light and lovely tale of romance and forgiveness on the face of it, but there is always that low level of dread, constantly building up higher and higher, until it finally crests and you can breathe again.
Superb suspense romance and great psychological thriller! Ella and her ten year old son, Nick, have moved to Stutter Creek, near Albuquerque, in a desperate attempt to escape from his abusive stepfather who has threatened to kill them both when he gets out of jail. They’ve bought the local diner and are saying in a rented home whilst they see if it will all work out well for them. the only person who knows where they’ve moved to and their fears is her Mum, no one in Stutter Creek knows about their past or the threats on their future. Meanwhile, her ex-husband has been released early on parole and the first person he visits is, of course, Ella’s mum..… In their new home there are frightening, mysterious noises in the attic, disturbing their sleep, so Ella calls out the police. Turns out there are racoons in the attic, so the local wildlife officer, Chet Boone, comes to help remove them and take them away. He’s also the local handyman and a hunk who Ella finds very attractive. Can she trust another man again? Will it be third time lucky in love for her and Nicky - or will her ex-husband get his revenge and kill them as he promised? The story is full of twists and turns with a strong female lead, a mother determined to protect her child and make a new, safe future life for them both. The story keeps the reader on the proverbial edge of their seat, uncertain of the outcomes till the end. Nick is a great lad, too, a son to be proud of and heroic, too. I have no hesitation to highly recommend this superb suspense romance and great psychological thriller - I really didn’t want to put it down till I’d read it all! Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley, too, for letting me read this book in exchange for an honest review.
