Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The metal robot of the title, a school-bus-yellow fellow with a rectangular head and torso, strikes stiff poses with other vintage toys in this photographic picture book. Described as "the earliest known wind-up toy robot," Lilliput 5357 first appeared in 1930s Japan. Czernecki (Paper Lanterns) sets him in tableaux with other collectible machinery, and establishes the character with a slender plot: "Every morning Lilliput 5357 wound up his motor and marched out to play. But then one morning... big robots with bad attitudes showed up." Menaced by an assortment of enameled and plasticky brutes, who "krrrunnccch" a baby-blue playmate under fire-engine-red feet and faux chrome, Lilliput hops in a streamlined, retro "Rocket Racer" (quaintly decorated with painted rivets) and "zip zoom vroooooms" to find a safe place to play. Lilliput stumbles through a city crowded with antique cars and a "Sky Rangers" zeppelin, steers around a garbage dump full of rubber ants, flies and rats, and visits a carnival of wind-up rides such as Ferris wheels. The clean, undented tin toys appear to have escaped a yard-sale fate. Czernecki interjects each scene with onomatopoeia, sets the action against empty white backgrounds and shows off the robots' gears and decals. Collectors might appreciate the close-ups, but the story of Lilliput's journey, unfortunately falls flat. Ages 3-up. (Mar.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-When a group of "BIG robots with BAD attitudes" destroys his playground, Lilliput 5357 jumps into his "rocket racer" and begins his quest for a safe place to play. Each place he stops is not quite right, being "TOO NOISY!" "TOO STINKY!" or "TOO SPOOKY!" Finally, just as he is about to give up all hope, a pair of "friendly ASTRO GUYS" arrive in a flying saucer to save the day. They beam the forlorn yellow robot to a distant planet of "friendly ROBOTEERS," where he has "A LOT of fun!" The brightly colored, imaginative photographic collages featuring a retro collection of the wind-up tin toys, along with strategically placed geometric shapes and appropriate sound effects, provide a lot to look at. Although the story is a bit awkward, the clever combination of old-fashioned charm and futuristic zing in the illustrations gives this title a curious appeal. Future fans of Ray Bradbury or the "Star Wars" saga will enjoy the eclectic sound effects, like "Bippity Zippity Beep Beep Beep," and will identify with Lilliput 5357 as he flies away on his adventure. Most young readers, however, might prefer a more humorous story about robots, such as Bob Staake's Hello, Robots (Viking, 2004).-Linda L. Walkins, Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Brighton, MA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
"Bippity Zippity Beep Beep Beep." Every morning robot Lilliput 5357 wakes up at eight, winds himself and goes out to play. One day, big, bad bully robots with bad attitudes storm the playground. These baddies literally break up Lilliput's friends. Now where will he play? He hops into his Rocket Racer and zooms off in search of a new playground. The dump is too stinky, and the carnival is too spooky. Thank goodness, the friendly Astro Guys appear in their flying saucer and send Lilliput to a wonderful planet full of robots ready to play. Adults might find it a bit disconcerting that Lilliput's reaction to the decapitation and dismemberment of his playmates is, "Where am I going to play now?" However, storytimers will adore this onomatopoeia-filled paean to retro wind-up toys. The digitally manipulated photographs, created by an international team of artists, are mixed with brightly colored Japanese characters on white backgrounds for an eye-catching treat. Prepare for repeated readings and I-Spy-type audience participation. (Picture book. 2-6)
