Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
Lilly, Minna and Theresa are friends who are lucky to live next door to each other. They enjoy being friends and always find fun things to do. However, today is a free day from school and the girls just can't seem to find a way to be together. Lilly's mom wants her to clean her room, Minna has to practice her piano and Theresa has to find the missing mouse that she brought into the house. When Minna's grandmother agrees to drive the girls to the community pool for the afternoon, they all pitch in to help each other complete necessary chores so that they can go swimming. Arriving at the pool, the girls encounter Spider and Bugsy who are known as the cool kids. They invite Lilly and Minna to join them for games but they tease Theresa and play tricks on her in the pool. Lilly enjoys being included in the games of the two boys but she knows she owes her loyalty to Theresa. At the end of the day, the girls help Minna find her lost mouse before the cat finds him, and the discovery of the mouse brings some interesting points to light about their new cool friends. The author brings the topic of bullying to the forefront through this story and offers readers ways to deal with this schoolyard problem. This makes a good addition for the elementary health curriculum for the classroom as well as the general media center collection. Reviewer: Joyce Rice
