Overview

Each season has its special joys and all are explored in the Lily and Trooper series, now combined into a single volume families can enjoy throughout the year.

"Imaginative Lily and her trusty dog Trooper make their own seasonal fun as they picnic in the country, play at the beach, jump in leaf piles, and go skating and skiing. A brief line of text appears under pictures rendered in vibrant color with a childlike, finger-painted quality." -The Horn Book

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Lily and her black and white dog are quite simply charming characters who are very real in that they make mistakes, fall down, get cold, and get hungry. Theirs is not a charmed life .... Indeed, these two best friends are just like the rest of us which makes them accessible and easy to relate to. Bright, flat paintings full of swirls and splashes of thick color compliment the spare text and young artists will be inspired to try their own hand at creating a Lily and Trooper picture." -Through the Looking Glass Children's Book Review

"The artwork is transporting ... It is not simply a visually compelling, exuberant world, but one that readers will revere for its glorious unctuousness." -Kirkus Reviews

"Young preschoolers will enjoy the cozy mess and silly farce." -Booklist

"The vibrant artwork reveals objects and figures outlined in black in front of swirling, flowing backgrounds of thickly applied paint." -School Library Journal

Children's Literature - Hazel Buys
This unusually long picture book is actually four books in one, originally published separately in the Netherlands as Lily and Trooper’s Spring, Lily and Trooper’s Summer, Lily and Trooper’s Fall, and Lily and Trooper’s Winter. Lily and her dog, Trooper, share adventures in brightly painted vignettes and landscapes expressive of each season. The images are simple, featuring black outlines and strong primary and secondary colors with paint applied thickly in a highly decorative style. All the action is front and center with one scene per page. The text consists of a brief phrase or sentence on each page; occasionally, there is no text. The translation suffers at times and the wording seems awkward. At other times the action does not seem to flow logically from one spread to the next because the activities depicted are not always linked. The illustrations will appeal to pre-school age children who could be encouraged to make up their own story to go with the pictures. The strong relationship between Lily and Trooper is the centerpiece of the narrative and is the unifying theme throughout the stories. This book would be useful in a preschool class or library as a resource for story hour based on the seasons, to facilitate discussions about favorite pets or to initiate discussions on companionship and social interactions. Reviewer: Hazel Buys; Ages 3 to 6.
