Lily and Trooper's Spring

Overview

In the first book of the series, Lily and Trooper wake to the sounds of birds singing. It must be spring. What better way to celebrate than a picnic breakfast? Suddenly a cow surprises them, sending them scurrying up a tree. Later, they swing a little too high, fall off, and land in a group of very surprised sheep! The sheep lead to pigs, which lead to mud, which leads to a mother duck and her ducklings. Finally it's time for a warm bath and bed.

Editorial Reviews

Jodee Taylor
With [its] simple text and attractive illustrations, [Lily and Trooper's Spring] will be enjoyed from everyone from babies to toddlers to beginning readers.
— ForeWord Magazine
Children's Literature - Carol Lynch
This brightly colored picture book follows a little girl and her dog through a spring day during which they repeatedly find themselves involved in messy situations. Young readers will enjoy the silliness of the story, the sound words, and the need for several clothing changes. Trooper, the canine companion, emerges as the most memorable character in the story as he bumbles through the adventures. Spetter's painted illustrations combine detailed characters with swirling backgrounds of blended colors. Although the text is simple, the story seems somewhat disjointed as the characters move rapidly from one scene to the next.
School Library Journal
PreS-In the first title, Lily and her dog, Trooper, spend a spring day picnicking and making the acquaintance of a cow, a few sheep, some pigs, and a family of ducks. Several mishaps, including landing in a mud puddle, require them to clean up three times before bedtime. In the second book, the pair go to the beach, pick flowers, and play ball. Each single-page illustration has one line of text beneath it, often only single-word exclamations. The vibrant artwork reveals objects and figures outlined in black in front of swirling, flowing backgrounds of thickly applied paint. The bright colors will attract children but they may be put off by the uneven, choppy wording. These books, which were originally published in the Netherlands, read more like a series of vignettes than stories and have the tone of an album with brief descriptive phrases for each picture. For more entertaining seasonal books about a child and beloved pet, turn to Cynthia Rylant's Henry and Mudge in Puddle Trouble (S & S, 1996) and Henry and Mudge in the Green Time (Bradbury, 1987).-Maryann H. Kirkus Reviews
Lily, a young girl, and Trooper, a spotted dog, conspire in one comic misadventure after another as they toast the first day of spring. A very simple text—often just a word or two or a sound—follows the two as they are involved, intentionally and otherwise, with a selection of farm animals: a cow upends their picnic plans, sheep soften their tumble from a swing toss, pigs share a mud puddle that Lily is tipped into by the surprised sheep, and a duck and ducklings take a ride in Lily's pram. While Lily and Trooper's rural rambles and incidents are genuinely pleasurable, the artwork is transporting. For the backgrounds, Spetter has laid on the paint as thick as cake frosting. It is not simply a visually compelling, exuberant world, but one that readers will revere for its glorious unctuousness. Lily is clothed in colors that fairly vibrate, giving her a manifest presence amid all the pictorial elements demanding attention. (Picture book. 1-6)
