Overview

Excerpt:

The breathing got louder and louder and louder, huffing into panting, panting into roaring, until she had to clap her hands over her ears to drown it out. Vaz grabbed one of her wrists and dragged her out the back door to the deck, slamming the door shut with his foot.

"Oh, man," he said, shaking his head. "You got ghosts."

— From LILY'S GHOSTS

Description:

13-year-old Lily is Furious.

She can't believe she has to move again after her mom's break-up with the latest boyfriend. Now they're broke and they'll have to spend the winter in Uncle Wes's creepy summerhouse in Cape May, New Jersey.

And the place is crawling with ghosts.

From the spiteful teenager who mistakes Lily for her high school nemesis to the restless spirit of her eccentric Uncle Max, Lily is haunted by a host of unhappy phantoms. But why are they here? And what do they want?

With the help of some mysterious clues, Lily and an intriguing new guy, local boy Vaz, uncover a sinister plot. If they don't foil the villainous plan in time, they may end up doing some eternal haunting of their own.

"A slightly spooky, romantic mystery. Her often funny story, peppered with ghostly interludes, is capped by that rarest of animals: a twist ending that is totally earned. This should be a movie just so tweens and teens will come ask for the book. Place it in their hands; they will likely thank you."
—Kirkus

"Ruby doesn't horrify so much as she insinuates in gracefully nuanced language that provides chilling support for the action. Make room for this first novel on the surefire ghost tale shelf."

"Sharp-witted narrative and lively characterizations... intriguing"
—Publishers Weekly

"A fast-paced, comic tale."
—Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

"Sure to delight the reader, will tickle readers' funny bones."

Editorial Reviews

Miami Herald - Sue Corbett
"Readers will keep turning pages to get to the (surprise) ending, but also because they'll be rooting for something good to happen to Lily."
School Library Journal - Renee Steinberg
Grade 5-8- "A cast of eccentric characters plays out this intriguing story. The story shifts back and forth between her reality and a parallel world inhabited by ghosts, giving the book multiple dimensions and keeping readers guessing. A likable character, Lily is curious and courageous in her attempts to get to the bottom of things. Readers will be hooked right up to the surprising ending."

    A reviewer

I liked Lily¿s Ghosts because there are ghosts. I like ghosts because they are spooky. You never know what is coming next. It is a spooky and funny book. The characters in this book are Lily, Lily¿s mom, Uncle Wes, Uncle Max, Kathern, and Vaz. Lily is my favorite character because she is sneaky.

    Suprisingly Good Book Report

AT FIRST BEFORE I GOT IT I totally wasn't in to this book like I just picked the ' ok it's better than any other sunshine state book so whatev. i'll get it' when I started to read this book I got SOO into it like ya know how they make books into movies I could TOTALLY picture this book as an AWESOME movie!!! I'm like sooo into scary movies and stuff and this did fit my expectations of a 'scary chideren's book' I don't really like stuff meant for 10 year old kids but this really was pretty mature for a sunshine state book ya know SOO TOTALLY try it!!!

    PRETTY GOOD

I got this book from the Scholastics book fair at my school. When I first tried to read it I was so bored that I just threw it in the back of my closet, but then a few months later I had nothing to read so I found it and started reading again and it turned out to be pretty good. I also had to read it because I am known to finish every book I read so I had to maintain that.

    A surprising but confusing book!!

Lily's Ghosts is one of the best booksI have ever read!! It is very interesting and surprising. One thing I didn't like about the book was that it skiped a few pages. I mean it went from page 22 to 55. It also happened on about page 80 to 55. It was confusing, but at the end, it explained what happened during that misprint.
