Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The "Civil War Library" series "introduces the major issues, events and people of this terrible war." This particular title begins with a discussion of the establishment of slavery in the United States. The following chapters describe the growing Northern opposition to the institution of slavery, the ensuing war and finally the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, which did not free a single slave—only slaves in the rebel states were freed and obviously their owners did not comply with this Presidential order. Emancipation would only happen if the Union won the war. Page after page of colorful and captioned illustrations will capture and keep young readers' attention. Occasional sidebars give additional information on some topics. At the end of the book, readers will find a timeline, glossary, chapter notes, a list of books and websites where one can learn more about this subject and an index. An excellent addition to school and classroom libraries. 2004, Enslow Publishers, Ages 8 to 9.
—Anita Barnes Lowen
School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-These volumes are brief, yet factual and informative. Pages that look like parchment are covered with colorful maps, illustrations, historical paragraphs, and sidebars. The books are excellent for history students who do not have a background in either subject, and their attractive and inviting layout will hook readers, thus sparking an interest in this pivotal era in American history.-Patricia Ann Owens, Wabash Valley College, Mt. Carmel, IL Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
