Third graders travel through time to keep history on track!

Abigail loves Mondays, and so does the rest of class 305. That's the day Mr. Caruthers asks them cool questions about history. Today Mr. C asks, "What if Abraham Lincoln never freed the slaves?" Abigail and her friends are ready to put their thinking caps on. But this time Mr. C wants them to do more than put their heads together-he wants them to travel back in time!

Turns out the "What If?" questions are real, and Mr. C has just come back from a visit to the past. He needs their help because it looks like President Lincoln might quit and never free the slaves! With a time-travel gadget and only two hours to spare, Abigail and her friends are going back to the past. But even though time traveling isn't hard, convincing Abraham Lincoln not to give up isn't going to be easy....

With a dollop of The Magic Tree House, a dash of Back to the Future, and pinch of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Blast to the Past is a recipe for fun!

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
A sprightly time travel tale, the inaugural novel in the Blast to the Past series opens as third-grade teacher Mr. Caruthers asks his students his weekly "What if?" question. After posing his latest hypothetical ("What if Abraham Lincoln quit and never issued the Emancipation Proclamation?"), the teacher asks a quartet of kids to meet him in the classroom after school. There, he tells chatty, affable narrator Abigail, twins Jacob and Zack, as well as Bo, a history-savvy new student, that he earlier that morning had traveled back to Washington, D.C., in 1862 to convince Abraham Lincoln not to go through with his plan to quit the presidency. Since Mr. Caruthers's efforts had failed, he asks the four youngsters to try to dissuade Lincoln from resigning and gives them his hand-held computer, programmed to deliver them to the capital city on the very day that Lincoln is to issue the Proclamation-if he stays in the job. Though there may be little suspense as to the story's outcome and some hokey twists, the vivid descriptions of Civil War-era Washington and some diverting plot twists (including the students' decision to whisk the war-weary president to present-day Washington to show him the Lincoln Memorial) make for engaging reading. With its relatively short length, full-page art and accessible writing, this is a good choice for reluctant readers. Ages 7-10. (Jan.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

A Fun Way to Learn History

¿What if¿¿ is the question that begins each Monday in Mr. Caruthers¿ third-grade class. Abigail and her friends love Mondays because they get to imagine what would have happened if famous figures in history hadn¿t done the important things they did. This particular Monday, Mr. Caruthers asks his class what would have happened if Abraham Lincoln had quit and not issued the Emancipation Proclamation. After class, Abigail and three of her friends discover that this is not a hypothetical question - Mr. Caruthers has been to the past, trying to convince President Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, but he wouldn¿t listen. Mr. Caruthers shows the four students a device that looks like a large Game Boy along with a cartridge which will take them back in time to save history. They will only have two hours and they must succeed or the world as they know it will be changed forever. When the children journey to the past, they see the world of 1862 and how different it was from their time. They meet several famous figures from history before finally meeting President Lincoln. When they cannot convince him that the North will win the war, they end up taking him ¿back to the future¿ so that he can see how important it is that he issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Readers who like the ¿Magic Tree House¿ series will enjoy this series as well. It is apparent that the authors have spent time researching their subject and they spoon out the historical information in a painless and enjoyable fashion. The back of the book contains the text of The Emancipation Proclamation as well as more historical information which enhances the story. The next book in the series is called ¿Disney¿s Dream¿ with the question, ¿What if Walt Disney never¿¿ For the question and the answer, you¿ll have to wait for Book 2 of this fun and educational series.

This book should be on every kid's wish list!

Some kids may look at this book, read the title, and place it back on the shelf because it looks too historical. However, Linsoln's Legacy is nothing like a boring history lesson. Instead, it's an adventure story that explores some historical facts about President Lincoln. Readers couldn't possibly find it to be anything but a delightful page-turner.

    Exciting and Unusual!

This is a great book for all kids. It has time travel and suspense. You learn unusual things about history that they don't teach you in school. I can't wait for the second book about Disney.

    Entertaining, and Educational too!

At first glance, this would seem to be one of those educational fiction books teachers and well-meaning parents are always handing kids, in hopes they'll be stimulated to learn history, geography, or some quantum physics in between flights of fancy. But hold on...Lincoln's Legacy is not just a history lesson, it's great entertainment too. What third grader wouldn't love to travel through time, along with a few cheeky classmates, and give struggling historical figures a hand when trouble besets their path into the history books? It's not quite rocket science, but then, even the best rocket scientist needs a little encouragement--as well as some quality entertainment! Make room on your child's bookshelf for more in the series by the Deustch/Cohen duo soon.
