Biography

With more than 40 million books in print in more than 10 languages, bestselling novelist W.E.B. Griffin enjoys a well-deserved reputation as a master of the military thriller.

Griffin began his career not as a writer but as a military man like the type he would eventually make millions writing about. After growing up in both New York City and the Philadelphia suburb of Wallingford, Pennsylvania, Griffin took the step in 1946 that -- little did he know at the time -- would set the course for his literary life: He enlisted in the United States Army. After finishing basic training, he went through counterintelligence instruction at Fort Holabird, New Jersey, and was assigned to the Army of Occupation in Germany under Major General I. D. White, commander of the U.S. Constabulary.

In 1951, while attending Philips University, in Marburg an der Lahn, in Germany, Griffin was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He again served under General White, both at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and in Korea, where he earned the Expert Combat Infantry Badge and served as a combat correspondent and as acting X Corps (Group) information officer. Upon his release from active duty in 1953, Griffin was appointed chief of the Publications Division of the Army Signal Aviation Test & Support Activity at the Army Aviation Center, Fort Rucker, Alabama.

Although he first wrote under various pen names, Griffin didn't begin writing his bestselling string of military novels until he was well into his 50s. His first Brotherhood of War novel, The Lieutenants, was published in 1982 and touched off Griffin's well-known reputation for writing with historical accuracy and fascinating detail. Publishers Weekly noted that this first novel "captures the rhythms of WW II army life... in an absorbing account of life among military men." Griffin would go on to pen additional books in the Brotherhood of War sequence and to launch other bestselling series -- including The Corps, Badge of Honor, Honor Bound, and Men at War, among others.

While Griffin's public persona is a bit of an enigma -- he's not one to make the talk show rounds -- it's clear that he both knows and appreciates his readers, especially his fellow military men. On his official web site, Griffin reflects, "Nothing honors me more than a serviceman, veteran, or cop telling me how much he enjoys reading my books."

Good To Know

Griffin was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Military Fiction from Norwich University.

He was vested in the Order of St. George by the U.S. Armor Association.

Griffin addressed the Corps of Cadets for the United States Military Academy.

Friendship Makes You Complete ~ Chapter 1

Sophia and her friend, Mia crept carefully through the trees. "Shhh!" Mia said suddenly. Her hand yanked Sophia down into a bush. "What?" Sophia peeked out of the bushes and saw a man dressed in black with a blood-stained knife. Sophia felt her blood turn to cold stone and she couldn't move. Mia smiled. "It's okay-" the man's black-gloved hand roughly jerked Mia out of the bushes. Sophia almost jumped up and knocked the stranger out, but she realized that the man hadn't seen her yet. She could still find a way to save her friend! Everything was silent. Even the birds weren't twittering. Something was utterly wrong. Of course! She slapped herself across thr face. Mia! Duh! She suddenly felt afraid. She wildly looked around. What if they were watching her? "Go on!" She whispered to herself. "Be brave! This is what friendship is!" She raced on, past dry leaves, past maple trees, past brambles and past bushes. She paused to catch her breath as she neared a train track. "Follow it!" She ordered. "No time to waste!" She walked along and skipped over a stone bridge. She neared a small house. Hmmm......maybe....? She ran to the door and knocked. A man's face peeked out. "Yes?" His eyes fell on her and he slammed the door. Yes! The right house! If she wanted to rescue her friend, she would have to climb through that open window on the side. She ducked and ran. When she was right next to it, she flung her arm up, clasping her fingers around the sill. She threw her other arm up, then pulled herself inside. Oops. Wrong decision. It was a house. Not a hideout. She turned to climb back out. "Hey! You!" Sophie whirled around..........

    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

This book is for anyone who wants to understand how Military Intellingenc actually worked during World War II. Magic wad known to a handful of people. W.E.B. Griffin has a special knowledge of both the "brass hats" and the people in the trenches. He knew many of the players at both levels and the specific individuals have told him specifics about events that have NOT been reported or released to other individuals.
I would reccomed reading other books in this or other series by this author. It would be better to read any of his series by starting with the first book in that series, then the second, etc.

This book is perfect for a military book club discussion

    Series is very good!

Not my normal genre of books, but thought I would give it a try and I am really into the whole series. I liked this book, but sure would have been better if it was on my Nook like the REST of the series!!!!!!

    A Great Read!!!

Go to your local bookstore and pick this one up!!! The characters come to life and the pages flip with ease. This is the type of book where you sit down, begin to read, and find yourself up at midnight, still flipping pages. The military language and the story's authentic style captivate and satisfy. This book deserves to be read, charished, and then read again. A definate must!!!
