Overview

For three decades, Ralph Peters has been the most provocative and visionary American writer on strategy, security, intelligence, and military affairs, predicting every major trend that has plagued the post-Cold-War world. A career military officer and acclaimed author, he has always faced the issues others shunned:The explosion of religious terrorism and its all-or-nothing natureThe resurgence of deadly ethnic strife as borders disintegrate around the worldThe fateful weaknesses of our extravagantly expensive intelligence systemThe dangers of over-reliance on technology to solve human problemsThe endless nature of 21st-century warfareOur military leadership's difficulty adapting to a changed worldThe colossal waste of taxpayer dollars on dubious weapons--at a cost in soldiers' livesWhy wishful thinking is as deadly as fanaticismThese and other enduringly vital themes are addressed in this definitive collection of the finest and most influential work of Ralph Peters over a generation of conflict. Lines of Fire is a career-capping and indispensible work for understanding today's crises--and tomorrow's.

LTC Peters wrote about the state of the US government and its military, military tactics and government pholosopy. I must say that his works in the first two chapters written in the mid 90's are highly prescient! I read them and couldn't help but reflect on the state of affairs in the government and its handling of conflicts today. I haven't finished the book, but I am sure that he continues this pattern of well researched information, knowledge gained from first-hand experience and probably a goodly dose of intuitive thinking. It is heavy, but when taking the time to read and reflect on today, you will see that there is so much real meat here that you'll want to buy a copy for your government representatives and send one on to the White House and Sec Def!

Peters chose 35 of his articles from over 1,000 he's written (1994-2011) in journals, magazines and newspapers to present those "worth reading thirty years from now." He's succeeded marvelously! This compilation is truly the 'best of the best' of Peters' writing on strategy and security. All will stand the test of time. Peters is today's most insightful strategist and these articles definitely show why that's true. Ralph Peters is a national treaure.
