All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Subscribing to the time-honored practice of striking when the iron is hot, the Jonas Brothers put out Lines, Vines and Trying Times in June of 2009, making it their third album in one year. True, Lines and A Little Bit Longer were separated by a soundtrack to a concert film, but the flood of product is a true reflection of the peak of the group's popularity, just as how the over-produced, stretched-thin Lines is a reflection of their hectic schedule. Where A Little Bit Longer was built on a strong song foundation, Lines, Vines and Trying Times feels constructed from the outside in, with the concepts coming before the tunes, concepts that all take the Brothers Jonas further away from the fizzy, power pop fun. Lines is designed to showcase a mature Jonas Brothers, who wear their maturation in an increased stylistic range, and fussed-over arrangements that lend this a stiffness of a band well beyond their years. Pop classicists that they are, the Jonases are a bit more comfortable with immaculate arrangements than they are with the expansion, as they fumble through a couple of country songs and "Don't Charge Me for the Crime," a truly bizarre duet with Common where they gamely, lamely affect a hard-boiled pose. Tellingly, most of the forced moments were written in collaboration with outsiders such as Cathy Dennis and Greg Garbowsky, the latter being responsible for co-writing "Poison Ivy," a power pop tune so labored it reveals just how good A Little Bit Longer was. Overthinking and over-production are the primary flaws on Lines, where every point is hammered home by horns transported from the waning days of the Reagan administration. This oddly yuppified production is more Taylor Hicks than Taylor Swift, but the presence of Joe's former girlfriend is felt elsewhere, whether it's in the lyric's heartbroken love songs (as well as a couple of rocking accusations), or how Miley Cyrus stands in for Taylor on one of those country songs. But Swift also comes to mind because she and the Jonas Brothers are trying to do a similar thing: make teen pop that skews adult in its sound and form. The JoBros did it effortlessly on A Little Bit Longer but on Lines, Vines and Trying Times the seams are showing, which makes it a little bit harder to enjoy, even if there are certainly moments where all their craft and charm click, resulting in some fine pop that points out what's missing from the rest of the record.
Reuters - Gary Graff
Nick Jonas said the songs on Lines, Vines and Trying Times are "our journal in songs," mostly about "all things we've gone through, personal experiences we get inspiration from." But citing the continuing influence of Elvis Costello, he added that "we've also been working on trying to use metaphors ... to kind of mask a literal thing that happens to us." Other inspirations the trio cited for the new album include the Zutons, Kings of Leon and Neil Diamond.

well i can tell from the albums title and the jonas brothers next studio album is going straight to the bargin bin but lots of people these days dislike the jonas brothers i can see why they do this album is full of childish songs and its just as weak as their past studio albums the lyics on every jonas brothers album are childish and lame and i know the jonas brothers have been stopped before by such acts as eminem, kid rock, marilyn manson, slipknot, metallica, megadeth just to name a few but this whole studio album is going to stink i just know it plus the jonas brothers are copying off of the backstreet boys and hanson including others as well

    Okay

I normaly don't like the Jonas brothers but this album had a couple of good songs like black keys and fly with me. I especially likes the duet with Miley Cyrus, Before the Storm. I was genuinely surprised when my friend forced me to listen it.

    Great New Album!

I have been a Jonas Brothers fan for quite some time now and I must say their new sound is great! You can tell their music is maturing with them and there are some great songs on this album!! If you are not usually a fan of these guys, try listening to "Black Keys", "Turn Right" or "Fly With Me" (which was featured in Night at the Museum 2). These are some of the album's greatests songs. If you like Miley Cyrus you will really enjoy "Before The Storm" and the song "Much Better" has some great horn sections. Also, the song "What Did I Do To Your Heart" has a country feel and it's great! Overall, the album is great and although older adults may not like it, it was not written for them, so they don't have to like it.

    AMAZING

The Jonas Brothers are not just for children. They are a talented trio. All thier music is beautiful! Thier voices and lyrics are also beautiful! Pretty much the only people who dont like them are mean and cynical, and who cares what they think anyways cause thier mean. And they usually dont know what they are talking about. They only post comments to hate.

Lines, Vines and Trying Times by the Jonas Brothers

This cd has changed my life in so many ways. The music may be considered "pop" so that it doesn't mean anything. The lyrics really mean something if you look closer. It touched my heart and also thousands of other girls and boys around the world. This cd offers more variations of they're singing than the other one's have shown. For example, they bring a lot more instruments in rather than typical drums, vocals, bass, and guitar, like violin and other unusual instruments in this genre. This cd is great for all lovers of great lyrics and maybe younger people but they're can be older fans.

Peter Pan and Wendy turned out fine, so won't you fly with me...

You. Yes, you, reading this review. you love the jonas Brothers. Deny it all you want, you love them, adore them, and can't get enough of them. Deny it still? Read further, dear reader.

But anyway, on to our review. These Jersey boys got talent. Real talent. Their 3rd album shows that talent more than anyother. It's got new tunes, new vibes, new instruments.. It took a few listens...but it's bloody good. AMAZING, actually

Heres a song by song review-[sorry if it's not in the particular order]

World War 3-this is a pow pow pow, fight fight fight, angsty song. All about fighting one sided, etc etc. Took a few listens, and it still remainds on my radar as okay. Nick's vocals are huskier and rougher in this one.

Paranoid- the first single off this album. Quirky, and alot different than anything the boys have ever done. I think why this picked this as the first single was to introduce their sound as cold turkey as possible. It's different, cool, and catchy. Good lyrics, great background vocals by Kevin, all around good. the music video gives a whole new look on this song. I suggest you check it out too

Fly With Me- In my humble opinion, this is the boy's BEST.SONG.EVER. Amazingly written, sure it's sappy, people, but aren't ALL love songs supposed to be sappy? The Jonas Brothers got the mental note. Goregous music, wonderful vocals, well written...it's just all around GREAT. more than great.

Poison Ivy- Catchy fun. It grew on me very quick. Joe's voice is so cute in this one and his speaking part at the very end just all around makes this irresistable!

Hey Baby- VERY jazzy. Pretty simple. Joe's vocals are smoother on this one. Still very good, easy listening.

Before the Storm- Nick's duet with Miley Cyrus. Now, i am strictly NOT a Miley fan. Well go on with that later, but i gotta admit, this is a great song. Touching, and Miley actually doesn't sound forced or strained on this one. Big surprise.

What Did I Do To Your Heart- The Jobros country song. Who knew? I don't think the boys should move to Nashville anytime soon, but this is a great song. Begs to be danced to. The verses are much stronger than the chrous, which is slower and over repeated.

Much Better- obviously the stand out of the album. With an 80's feel/vibe, and simple but super sweet lyrics, this is a star in my book. The controversal story behind the song adds the popularity...and with the news that came out about a week ago, guess Camilla wasnt MUCH BETTEr after all, huh?

Dont Charge Me for the Crime- it's grown on me...slightly. But the jonas brothers definately shouldn't do anymore rap. It's simply no their thing, and i hate rap anyway. Features rapper Common.

Black Keys- beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. Amazing vocals by Nick and Joe comes in at the end with a voice like an angel. GOREGOUs song. One of the best.

turn Right- Another slow song with Black Keys. My second fave on this Cd. goregous lyrics, and the chorus, which is sun by Joe is just...tearjerking! Tissues, anyone?

Don't Speak- With a U2/The Cure vibe and feel. The strongest part, to me, is the bridge. Okayish, still cool.

Keep It Real- reminds me of the boys a year ago. Cathcy, upbeat, the boys at their best.

Did i change your mind? I hope so, becuase with this new Cd...the Jonas Brothers are bound to be around for quite a while. amazing Cd. HIGHLY recommended.

You know its about drugs, right?

Lines=coke, vines=weed, trying tymes=dealing with addiction. The Jonas Brothers are finally breaking out of their Disney Shell and singing about real, dirty life. I think you can hear one of them snorting at 2:13 on track 3. Overall a fantastic and groundbreaking album!

Lines, Vines, and Trying Times is going to be AWESOME!!!!!!!!

Lines, Vines and Trying Times is the best JB album yet! They are starting off now with more poetic and serious songs rather than "childish" songs, that still have a good and catchy beat to it. This album is a must buy! But just because it's more poetic and serious doesn't mean it's blah. "Turn Right" is a very poetic and heartfelt song that is amazingly written, and "Hey Baby" has a catchy beat to it that you'll be singing to all the time. It even features "Fly With Me" from Night at the Museum 2 (also amazingly written). And as the bonus track they have kindly added "Keep It Real" from their hit Disney Channel Series JONAS (also a good, catchy song). Buy it, you won't regret it!
