This booklet is designed as a reference for experienced Linux users and as a learning tool for newcomers. Commands were chosen for inclusion on the basis of their relevance to the average user or system administrator, and inclusion in most Linux distributions. Most commands are from the GNU project, many are from BSD projects, and are generally expected with any POSIX-compliant system.

Usage Notes Command names are organized alphabetically in each section. Each command description consists of a title line (with a short definition in English), one or more invocation lines (showing overall syntax and in some cases the directory location of the binary for the command), and syntax descriptions of the command's options and arguments.
  • A $ represents the system prompt and is not typed by the user
  • Boldface represents items which must be typed exactly as shown
  • Italics represent items that require substitution (such as filenames)
  • Brackets [ ] surround optional items; do not type the brackets (unless otherwise specified) The following special abbreviations are used to minimize redundant text:
  • stdin represents the standard input: by default, this is the terminal keyboard
  • stdout represents the standard output: by default this is the terminal screen
  • stderr represents the standard error: by default, this is the terminal screen
  • option represents the selection of an option from the list followingthe command line
  • file represents a filename
  • arg represents an argument
  • Plurals (e.g., options, files or args) imply that multiple occurrences are permitted
  • Numbered arguments (e.g., filel, filet) indicate that a precise number of
