Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The collaborators from Lionel at Large return with an autumn adventure that begins on Lionel's first day of school. He is uneasy: ``I have a new shirt, new pants, and new shoes. . . . But I am just the same old me. I don't match my new things.'' At his parents' prompting, he compares an old photo with his ``new'' image in a mirror. Now persuaded that he has grown and changed since last September, he gobbles up his breakfast, saying ``The new me doesn't want to be late.'' Other chapters focus on his new teacher, raking leaves and Halloween trick-or-treating, all of them appealing and wry. Krensky's stories and dialogue are realistic and humorous, perfectly matched by Natti's upbeat color drawings. Ages 4-9. (October)
School Library Journal
K-Gr 2 First introduced in Lionel at Large (Dial, 1986), Lionel is a sensitive, yet quite resourceful, seven-year-old boy with typical seven-year-old concerns. In each short, easy-to-read chapter, he is faced with a new challenge measuring up to his new clothes on the first day of school, coping with a new teacher who asks the class to stand up and talk about themselves, tackling a yard full of leaves that have to be raked, and solving a Halloween mystery. Sometimes on his own, and often with the help of his loving family and friends, Lionel comes out on top in each episode of this low key, but very positive easy reader. Natti's familiar round-faced characters and exuberant drawings in pencil and watercolor washes are a per fect complement to the text, capturing all the warm, rich hues of the fall. A hit in any season. Luann Toth, Summit Free Public Lib . , N.J.
