Jesse Martin was destined for adventure. Born in Munich in 1981 while his parents were traveling through Europe in a kombi van, he spent his early years in the beautiful Daintree Rainforest of North Queensland, Australia. By the time he was 14 he had sailed along Australia’s tropical coast on a flimsy catamaran and had trekked through southeast Asia. At 16 he kayaked through remote islands of Papua New Guinea and then crewed on a yacht that sailed from Belize to Tahiti. He is an ambassador to a number of youth outreach organizations, including Reach Youth and the Young Endeavor Program.

Just two weeks after his eighteenth birthday, Jesse Martin sailed into the record books, becoming the youngest person ever to circumnavigate the world alone and unassisted. Most people would never dream of such a foolhardy trip—not so with this young sailor. Martin gathered financial supporters, equipment, and expert advice to make a childhood dream come true, despite what many would consider an alarming lack of practical experience. Having come to his decision, he simply made it happen. Although it might seem that Martin is one of those people born to excel, he insists throughout the book that his life is no different from anyone else's—he merely does not shy away from a challenge. This tale is truly inspirational, written with compelling narrative and a liberal sprinkling of journal entries that give an inviting glimpse into Martin's emotional state during those eleven months at sea. He writes in a style that is just what one would expect from a teen writer—casual but clear, and at times, decidedly Australian. There is just one small obstacle in the inclusion of numerous technical sailing terms. For the unfamiliar, the jargon can become weighty. Fortunately, the glossary helps clear some of the confusion. Not only will this book appeal to adults for its incredible adventure but also to teens for its added bonus in the message that anyone can do whatever his or her heart desires. It is just a matter of setting one's mind to the challenge and accomplishing it! Glossary. Photos. Maps. Appendix. Gr 8 Up-In 1999, Martin sailed around the world solo and unassisted. In a 34-foot yacht named Lionheart, the 17-year-old Australian used no fossil fuels, received no supplies or visitors, and never stepped off the boat for the entire 10-month trip. His narrative is conversational in tone and unsparingly honest, revealing his insecurities as well as a quick wit. Restless and bored by school, he found that sailing became an obsession that intensified after some short excursions with family and friends. Martin wasn't deterred by the complexity or expense of a trip of this magnitude and he was resourceful in finding sponsors and sailing mentors. Remarkably, his mother mortgaged her house to help buy his boat. Once he set sail, the text changes to diary format and chronicles an unpredictable sea, loneliness and isolation, a troublesome leak, and near collisions with large ships. A map plots significant events such as a whale encounter, a force 10 storm, and the spot where he spent his 18th birthday. Solar panels and telephone and e-mail access remind readers that the author is a new breed of sailor, but his story is inspirational nonetheless. The narrative form is simple, and the book hits all the marks for scope, teen appeal, and emotion. Young adults will be heartened by Martin's message that even an ordinary kid can follow his dream.-Vicki Reutter, Cazenovia High School, NY Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
The rousing account of a 17-year-old Australian's solo, nonstop sail around the world in his yacht, the Lionheart, published to coincide with the airing of a National Geographic special about the journey. After 11 months at sea and nearly 27,000 nautical miles, Jesse Martin became the youngest person to circumnavigate the globe. When he set sail in late 1998, the voyage "was the culmination of years of dreaming." Reared in the Daintree rainforest, Martin had a colorful childhood. At age 11, he was backpacking through Southeast Asia with his mother and his brother Beau; by 14, Jesse had already completed a three-month sailing trip from Melbourne to Cape York with Beau and their father. One year later, Jesse and Beau kayaked in Papua New Guinea and wrote an article about their experiences for Australian Geographic. When Martin decided to sail around the world, he notes, "I started from scratch, with no boat, no equipment, little training, and even less experience." To support the endeavor, he approached Australian Geographic and a host of other potential sponsors. Something about the teen inspired confidence, and many companies signed on. In order to attain the record of an unassisted solo journey, Martin could not take supplies on board during his journey, although he was allowed to hand off garbage and at the halfway point to take on mail, which had to be inspected by an official to verify that it contained nothing that could assist him. The rapid narrative is peppered with Martin's journal entries, which reveal the remarkable teen's complexity. One part extremely competent sailor, he repairs a damaged furler and fixes the wind generator after a bird crashes into the blades. And one partforgetful teen, he neglects to pack a comb and for the next 11 months must use a fork to groom his hair. A tribute to the spirit of adventure, akin to Robin Lee Graham's Dove.
