Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
This small book presents basic information about Lipizzan horses in 129 words. Chapter one explains that Lipizzans are grey in color although they appear to be white. They are smart horses with strong legs and thick, curved necks. They can dance, prance, and leap into the air. Chapter two describes the foal and adult stages of growth, including telling the reader that the average height is fourteen to fifteen hands tall. An information box explains that a hand is about four inches in length. Performances are highlighted in chapter three. Lipizzans are shown standing on their hind feet, stepping high to a musical beat, and moving together in patterns. The gentle nature of Lipizzans is featured in chapter four. Because these horses are calm and friendly toward people, they can be found pulling carriages through parks and along busy city streets. Full-color photographs face each page of concisely written text. It includes a glossary, a two-book bibliography, directions for using the Facthound internet site, and an index. This good beginning book for young researchers is part of the "Horses" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
