Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Carol Vermeesch, MSN, RN (Michigan State University College of Nursing)
Description: This is the tenth edition of a comprehensive nursing practice reference, updated from ninth edition of 2010.
Purpose: The purpose is to guide nurses in a variety of settings to provide excellent patient care. It is also a resource to help train and mentor other nurses. Every nurse has times when he or she needs to learn or be updated on current practice. This book serves as a resource of essential, evidence-based nursing practice.
Audience: Both student nurses and practicing nurses will find this to be a valuable resource. Nursing students will find the information on nursing practice to be well organized and comprehensive. It includes North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) labels for students to use to develop nursing care plans. Practicing nurses can use this to review general information on a wide range of topics as well as guidelines for specific procedures. The book incorporates guidelines based on professional organizations that influence and direct nursing practice.
Features: The book is divided into five parts. It starts with an overview of the profession of nursing as well as specific areas of practice (medical-surgical nursing, maternity and neonatal nursing, pediatric nursing, and psychiatric nursing). The first part reviews the role of the nurse in healthcare and presents information related to health promotion and genetics. The other four parts cover specific areas of nursing practice and using a consistent outline format. Reviews of disease states follow the medical model, but the care is based on the nursing process. Throughout all areas of practice the book uses inserts to bring attention to nursing alerts, evidence base, and drug alerts. Gerontologic alerts appear throughout the sections on medical-surgical nursing. A number of diagrams are used to reinforce the information, but in some instances actual pictures would be more helpful. The appendixes detail basic lab values for adult and pediatric patients and include some conversion tables. The last appendix lists a variety of organizations with their mailing and web addresses.
Assessment: This is reference for a variety of nursing practice areas. It isn't meant to replace content-specific textbooks (i.e. medical-surgical or pediatric), but it is an easy-to-use source of essential information. Evidence-based updates reflect ever-changing nursing practice.
