Overview

4-STARS from Doody's Review
"This book is extremely well done. The material is effectively presented with abundant color illustrations. Important information and suggestions for primary care physicians are spot on, such as obtaining a standing radiograph for a patient suspected of having knee arthritis, among others. The advice to avoid excessive ordering of MRI studies by those not planning to implement the results in their treatment plan is a good strategy and a money saver. I highly recommend this book to all primary care physicians caring for patients with musculoskeletal disorders. It is currently the best work on this topic available." - Edward Abraham, MD, University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine, on behalf of Doody's Review Service

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Edward Abraham, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is the second edition of a book about the care of patients with common orthopedic disorders.
Purpose: The purpose is to present current information about treatment options for patients with musculoskeletal problems which primary physicians may see in their office.
Audience: The audience is primary care physicians and their trainees. Nurses, therapists, and other medical personnel can benefit from the book as well. The editors — two orthopedic surgeons and an internal medicine physician — are more than qualified to write on this subject and are supported by a score of credible contributors.
Features: The main part of the book is organized into anatomical groupings. Each chapter includes sections on clinical presentation, physical findings, studies, treatment, and clinical course. Brief summary color inserts highlight important guidelines, such as clinical points not to be missed, when to refer, patient assessment, and ICD-9 diagnostic codes. Chapters are well presented with color illustrations, photographs, and radiographs, which also can be used to educate patients in the office. One section deals with general medical treatment methods and information on such topics as osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, perioperative care of joint replacement patients, and the use of anti-inflammatory medications. Also covered are trigger point and joint injections, casts and splints, rehabilitation and home physical therapy. The book also includes patient information sheets.
Assessment: This book is extremely well done. It is currently the best work on this topic available.
