Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description: Books in the Lippincott's Primary Care series offer a hands-on approach to everyday problems encountered in the clinic. This one on orthopedic problems is a graphically intense, quick reference that makes the diagnosis and treatment options simple.
Purpose: The stated goal is to present a primer and treatment guide for the most common musculoskeletal problems seen in primary care. As the diagnosis and treatment options have changed significantly over time, this is a most noble goal and the authors have done extremely well in meeting the challenge.
Audience: This book is for everyone who practices in a primary care setting. The text is easy to understand and supplemented by many graphics, and it assumes little a priori knowledge of the subject or diagnosis. The authors are practicing clinicians who understand how to get to the point.
Features: The series uses distinct markers for "Not to be Missed" and "When to Refer," which are extremely useful. In addition, the book includes access to a website that has a search function for the text, video clips for procedures, and downloadable patient information sheets. The illustrations, figures, and reproductions of radiologic studies are extremely good and are a major highlight of the book, as is the inclusion of the ICD-9 codes for different diagnoses.
Assessment: This should be in every primary care medical library and physical therapy clinic. The patient aids are tremendous. This stands out from most orthopedics books focused on the nonorthopedic practitioner.
