Overview

Lippincott's Review for Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification, Fifth Edition provides the information nurses need to achieve certification in the specialty of medical-surgical nursing. This helpful reference covers the broad range of content found on the actual examinations, including disorders by body system, such as coronary artery disease, COPD, and diabetes. The product reviews signs and symptoms, diagnostic tests, medical treatments, nursing assessments, and interventions for scores of health problems. Concise refreshers on wound care, perioperative nursing, collaborative practice, nursing research, and legal issues are also included. Review questions after each chapter and an end-of-book posttest help assess the nurse's preparedness for the exam. The book is appropriate for exams of both major certifying bodies: the ANCC and the AMSN.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Cynthia Lee Cummings, RN, MSN, EdD (University of North Florida Brooks College of Health)
Description: Chapters in this review for medical-surgical certification are well written and timely, with pertinent and current information. This updates the fifth edition of 2007.
Purpose: The purpose is to prepare RNs for the medical-surgical certification offered through AACN, and this is an important resource for nurses looking to obtain this certification.
Audience: RNs employed in the medical-surgical area are the intended audience.
Features: The book addresses the major medical-surgical systems in a format similar to that of a medical-surgical textbook. It outlines each systems area, highlighting important topics and providing review questions. I like the way it addresses current topics with comparisons, and medications in topic boxes when needed. Nurses will appreciate the way that it covers pertinent areas without going into a lot of refined detail. However, it needs more review questions at the end of each chapter and it could use more color and be more visually appealing.
Assessment: This book is very effective for the audience that it is addressing. Nurses will find it informative and pertinent. They would probably like more review questions, as that is usually the stumbling block. Other than that, I would highly recommend it. I have always liked the Lippincott review publications and encourage my students to use their books for NCLEX preparation.
