Overview

Sometimes a good-bye is just the beginning...

When Emily Carson's parents die in a plane crash, she's left with nothing but her mother's last words scrawled in lipstick on a tray table: "Emily, please forgive me."

Now it's fall and Emily moves to New York City - where she attracts the attention of two very different boys: the cute, popular Owen, and her quirky chemistry partner, Anthony. With the help of some surprising new friends, Emily must choose between the boy who helps her forget and the one who encourages her to remember, and ultimately heal.

Debut author Jennifer Jabaley has written a wonderful, feel-good romantic comedy with real emotional depth. Full of lovably wacky characters, Lipstick Apology is a heartwarming story about the true meaning of forgiveness.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Emily Carson's parents are killed in a plane crash, but as her mother is dying, she scrawls an enigmatic note in lipstick on an aircraft tray table: EMILY PLEASE FORGIVE ME. Still reeling from her loss and the ensuing media frenzy over the message, Emily must leave behind her home and friends in Pennsylvania. She moves to New York City to live with her new guardian, Aunt Jolie, a glamorous, wealthy and famous make-up artist. With the fresh start a move offers, Emily opts for popularity at her new prep school. Much to her surprise she becomes one of Darlington High's most notorious students, especially when she begins dating athletic, ‘hot-guy' Owen. Shallow characters abound in this chick-lit novel. Among the stock characters are the effeminate, hair-stylist best friend to Jolie, the previously mentioned golden boy jock, the nice boy from the wrong side of the tracks (in this case, Brooklyn), and two model-thin girlfriends. Emily is clueless throughout, especially given all the warnings to her about her boyfriend. Her behavior is often inconsistent. Thus, she is dismayed by the superficiality of her classmates regarding looks yet delightedly invites over new friends for a make-over from her aunt. In general, a new hair style, a work-out at the gym, or a box of doughnuts often solves the current problem for Emily or one of her friends. In case the reader does not understand the feelings or message that a situation is meant to convey, the author spells it out, leaving no gaps to fill. Inaccuracies in the text jar the reader, as do the numerous appearances by various characters at doorsteps unannounced. There is enough here about shopping, prep-school parties, boys, and gossip to keepdie-hard fans of this genre happy. However, most will be disappointed by the stereotypical characters, the inconsistencies, and the predictable ending. The two story threads—dealing with the tragedy of a young girl who has lost her parents and a teenager's pursuit of popularity—do not mesh well. Reviewer: Margaret Orto
From The Critics
Gr 9 Up—When Emily Carson's parents are killed in a plane crash, she is left to struggle not only with the loss of her family but also with solving the mystery of her mother's cryptic last words, scrawled in lipstick on a tray table: "Emily please forgive me." She leaves her quiet Pennsylvania town to live in Manhattan with her Aunt Jolie, a famous make-up artist. With the help of her aunt and the woman's hair-stylist-to-the-stars friend, Emily gets a new look that allows her to fit in with the popular crowd at her new prep school. To her surprise, as well as that of the other students, Emily has sparked the interest of Owen, the most popular boy in school. While Emily may be confused, readers will know that Owen is a bad boy who will disappoint her, and that she will end up with her handsome but less-popular chemistry lab partner. Jabaley's debut novel is standard chic-lit fare complete with Manhattan makeovers and prep-school parties. The plot is predictable, with some inconsistencies—a Google search on Emily's mother yields only four hits, none of which deal with the media frenzy surrounding the tray-table message. The characters are two-dimensional with stereotypical reactions and language. However, chic-lit fans will forgive all these flaws as they devour the pages right up until the happily-ever-after ending.—Lynn Rashid, Marriotts Ridge High School, Marriottsville, MD

LIPSTICK APOLOGY follows 16-year-old Emily, whose parents die in a plane crash on their way to California. In the rubble, rescuers find a tray table with the words " Emily, please forgive me" written in lipstick. Emily has no idea what her mother meant, and she goes into a depressed slump trying to figure it out.

Eventually, three months later, she moves to New York to live with her aunt, Jolie, a famous make-up artist. Despite having totally different lives, Jolie and Emily try to bond over take-out food and good movies.

In New York, Emily starts at a new school where she is befriended by two popular girls, Lindsey and Andi, and a not-so-popular guy named Anthony. She is also head-over-heels in lust for the most popular boy in school - Owen.

But is Owen all he's made out to be? Or is he just a great distraction from the real problems in Emily's life?

Deciphering her mother's message really takes a toll on Emily, but when she finally finds out what her mother meant, she'll have to ask herself, does she really want to know?

This is a great read, and you'll root for Emily the whole way through.

    great!

this story was awesome- although the writing was a little childish (i hate when authors use capital letters... there are other ways to let the readers know that the characters are screaming) it was romantic, and it kept you guessing. i loved the whole thing, and i read it very quickly. this was a new take on romance and making discoveries... very refreshing.
    highly recommended.

This is a wonderful book for readers of all ages!

Jennifer Jabaley has taken a sad and serious topic and put a fun and hearwarming spin on it. She has created memorable characters who you hate to leave at the end of the book. This would make a great film. Can't wait to read Jennifer's next book.

    Great Debut Novel

While you are saddened by the trajedy that Emily has to endure with the loss of her parents, you are at the same time excited for the new life she is undertaking with new friends, experiences and romances. This book is both funny and sad and I couldn't put it down. It will keep you guessing til the end as to what the cryptic message left by her mother really means and also what boy Emily ends up choosing. Whether you are a teen or adult you will find this first time novel by Jabaley worth the read.

    Truly enjoyable. A great read!

I recently finished reading Lipstick Apology by Jennifer Jabaley. It was a fantastic novel that grabbed my attention right from the start. It is a heartwarming story of forgiveness and accepting people for who they really are. You follow Emily as she morns the loss of her parents and searches for the answers to her mother's last words which are scribbled on an airplane tray table. Emily, please forgive me. These four little words take her on a journey of self discovery. As Emily unfolds her mother's secret, she experiences a new home with her Aunt Jolie, new friendships and her first love. It is a sweet coming of age story. I couldn't put it down.
