Liquid Pipeline Hydraulics, by Shashi Menon, is a practical guide for engineers, technicians or other persons involved in the design and operation of liquid pipelines. The book is a quick, handy guide to the hydraulic principles by avoiding rigorous mathematical formulas, and presenting practical applications for the reader to use as a guide. The mathematical theorems and principles that are presented in simplified form detail the pertinent information needed by the reader. The book covers a broad spectrum of pipeline areas such as hydraulics, pump analysis, unsteady state and economics. An excellent reference guide is provided so that the reader, at their choosing, may delve into more details for each section covered. Liquid Pipeline Hydraulics covers the basics of designing, building, and operating a pipeline system with example problems at each section involving `real world¿ scenarios. Some topics were presented in such a way that I was enlightened to come up with other ideas to implement operating strategies Energy Management and Optimization. A particular section that I found useful, and presented nicely, was the Pump Analysis section. Too often, many companies utilize hydraulic software for detailed hydraulic analysis, although these tools are very helpful, the Author¿s discussion in the Pump Analysis section provides straightforward means to analyze the situation in that a field engineer, in a simple spreadsheet, can trouble-shoot areas in hydraulics, as well as be useful in ad-hoc analysis. The writing presented good information that is further illustrated to be useful, especially when we find ourselves that the hydraulic software is not readily accessible for use. However, this book is not ¿light reading¿ and at times delves into fairly intricate details that may not apply to all readers. The appendices that provide, tables, formulas and some answers to chapter questions are very helpful. All in all, this book is an excellent overview of all things considered for transporting liquids through a pipeline. This book is a very handy reference for both, the novice and experienced hydraulic engineer alike.
