Children's Literature - Justina Engebretson
Money! It is what everyone loves when they have lots of it and it is what everyone covets when they do not have enough of it. As chair of the fundraising for the middle school cheerleading squad, Lissa is in charge of finding the best fundraising options for her team. With the new budget cuts, the athletic department has taken a real loss, and this year's fund raising efforts will be more intense. Some girls can easily afford to cover the extra cheerleading costs, but Lissa is not one of those girls. Ever since her dad died six years ago, Lissa's mom has worked hard to provide for Lissa and her older sister. Money is still tight, though, especially with all the recent expenses of planning her sister Dulci's quinceanera, the traditional Hispanic celebration that marks a girl's passage from childhood to womanhood. The first fundraiser attempt goes well, but the team fails to raise enough to cover the total cost of the first two competitions, which means each cheerleader will have to come up with the difference. Will Lissa have to quit the team? A part of the "Team Cheer" series, this chapter book includes themes of friendship, compassion, and teamwork. Spanish words are mixed throughout the text bringing an authentic tone to the book. An English translation is always provided either at the bottom of the page or embedded in the text. Other definitions and explanations are provided at the bottom of the pages for terms or vocabulary words pertaining to cheerleading. Some fun activities and suggestions are provided at the back of the book to further engage the reader with the story and its characters. Overall, elementary girls are sure to enjoy this fun read.
