School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 5-9-This convoluted story begins with an Austin, Texas, inner-city Boy Scout troop on a weekend camp-out. While temporarily unaccompanied by their Scout leader, who is on a date, the boys are roused from their sleep by a large, bloody-faced canine and a suspicious-looking man. Putting these sightings together, they suspect a werewolf is lurking nearby. Nevertheless, they continue their camping weekend, during which they find possible signs of the occult and one of their members is kidnapped for a short time. Back in the city, the boys stumble on a drug operation, become involved with the police, spy on one troop member, discover another member's long-standing ties to a major criminal, learn a little about teamwork, and eventually help a reclusive father find a worthwhile role in their community. Too many characters are introduced; none are well developed and all display inconsistencies and are unbelievable. Some slip in and out of the story sporadically. The book looses itself and its integrity in an uneasy mixture of themes and genres. The writing is uneven and often tells readers what characters are like and what they are experiencing and feeling, rather than showing them. Several minor plot elements are never resolved. The seeds of a good story (or two, or three) are here, but they have not successfully matured.-Darcy Schild, Schwegler Elementary School, Lawrence, KS
