Listening to Love: Responding to the Startling Voice of God

Overview

Love Is Calling. How Will You Answer?

One of our greatest desires is to know we are loved by our Creator. Yet the depth of our apprehension is often equally strong: If I listen, we wonder, what will God say? If I open myself up to blessings, what will God require in return? As we trace this line of thinking, the God of all goodness becomes, in our minds, the God of our worst fears.

Embrace a Love That’s Worth the Risk.

God is far greater than our most expectant dreams. While he does often ask everything of us, he actually wants everything for us. He doesn’t want blind loyalty or bored religious compliance; he longs for nothing less than our entire passionate self–something most of us have yet to glimpse. God’s desire is that people lean in, listen, and wrestle with him so that they can respond to him without fear.

Can this God be trusted? Absolutely. Will the journey be easy? Not a chance. But once you learn to listen to love, you’ll find that there’s only one way you can adore this unmanageable, unpredictable, wild, and unruly God: with your whole heart.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“Jan’s unique voice offers us a bold invitation to imagine what our lives would look like if we trusted in a God whose greatest gift to us is Love, not answers. With patient and wise insight, Jan takes the risk of letting us into her own life, and in the process helps us remove the obstacles that stand in the way of embracing the Love we’ve always longed for. This book is for anyone who hungers for more of God.”
–Kathy Troccoli, speaker, singer, and co-author of Falling in Love with Jesus

“God is speaking, always. He invites us to hear, but the noise around us and in us keeps his voice tuned low enough to ignore. I know I need to listen, but I need more than merely being told to do so. Jan Meyers tenderly invites us to consider what we fear we may hear and helps us enter the sweet hope even in hard words. From her own suffering, she speaks of the light of his fierce kindness. What I promise from this book is that God’s voice will not remain dim or slight but that in hearing his passion your joy will grow beyond measure. Thank you, Jan, for listening to God and speaking light and life for us.”
–Dan B. Allender, Ph.D., president, Mars Hill Graduate School, author of The Wounded Heart and The Healing Path

“Jan Meyers is a friend and colleague whose willingness to open her heart to the larger romance Christ has been telling since before the world’s foundation has wooed countless men and women closer to the heart of Christ–myself included.”
–The late Brent Curtis, co-author of The Sacred Romance

“Jan Meyers has written a realistic, earthy, and above all, practical, guide on how to recognize the voice of God in the midst of all the other voices clamoring for our attention. And she has done it in plain English, free from all the pious code-words that speak only to the initiate. She gently helps us discard the masks, blinders, and earplugs we commonly use to keep a loving God from entering deeply into our hearts.”
–William Frey, bishop, and author of The Dance of Hope

    Simply the Best

A friend had loaned me Meyers' The Allure of Hope earlier this year, but this follow-up blew my socks off. Keep your eyes on this startlingly gifted young writer and counselor, whose own open heart, so welled with the compassion of God, will cause your eyes to well up and your own heart to overflow. I am very, very impressed with this woman's writing, especially in contrast to such other 'fluff' out there in the Christian reading market.... Jan Meyers draws effectively from events, people and authors who have touched her own life in communicating the complexly beautiful love of God, our Father, Husband, Best Friend and Lover. I fall more deeply in love with this Jesus each time I read Jan's writing, and I'm more able to bear up under personal pain as she encourages honest fellowship and open, no-holds-barred prayer with the One who loved us first and best.

    Redemptive Book!

Listening to Love helped me to open up to a fuller sense of redemption. It exposed how much I thought of obediance in a mechanical way that was devoid of the relationship it involves. Not only do I have a better sense of how to listen and respond to the Lord I found myself softening to Him as I read. In addition, Jan has an excellent way of putting words to many of the things I find myself wrestling with. It is an excellent read.

    My new favorite book!

I'm midway through my THIRD read of Listening to Love! (And I've read several chapters many more times than three.) This is not a how-to book, prescribing simplistic formulas or analyzing scripture passages. Instead, it's more like a familiar walking stick that's particularly helpful in exploring new terrain along the spiritual journey. And reading her book made me want to go there -- to pay more attention to the movements of God in my life, and to see them through a lens of pervasive and perfect Love who is Jesus. Jan's lived all over the world and traveled extensively the interior lanscape of her own heart. Her stories consistently drew me out of my 'observer' chair, and into my own story with God. To me, that is the true measure of a book worth reading and re-reading!
