Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Robertson Mason
Teaching young children to write is a complicated task. Teaching students who speak limited English in even harder. How does a teacher get students to move past forming letters and simplistic sentences to creating truly personal paragraphs and essays? According to this author—by talking to them. She contends that holding lengthy class meetings will give every child a chance to share, and by giving students more time to write, they will create better pieces of writing. There is nothing new behind this idea, but what makes this book useful is that the author creates a plan for teaching: How do you organize your classroom? How do you schedule writing time? How do you teach grammar while encouraging creativity? Most importantly, how do you grade writing? She answers all of these questions, and provides numerous lesson ideas and sample rubrics. While experienced teachers looking to adjust their current teaching methods will find this book useful, new teachers will be the ones to truly benefit from it. The book takes much of the research they studied in college and distills it into an easy to read action plan. She also presents ways to reach non-English speaking students without losing the rest of the class. While not ground breaking, this book is a very good utilization of current research.
