Overview

Stephen Hough's previous albums have already established his credentials as an exceptionally scintillating and searching interpreter of Liszt. Hough possesses a phenomenal technique, yet he is also a master of understatement, and that's part of what makes his Liszt so special. The B Minor Ballade, for example, offers plenty of opportunity for breast-beating melodrama, but in Hough's hands the music sounds like a sweeping, shadowy landscape inhabited by a few eloquent, melancholy characters. The E Major Polonaise, by contrast, is effulgent, effervescent -- a far cry from the Chopin-on-steroids approach one usually encounters with this work. Of course, the Sonata is the main course here, and it is served up with an extraordinary attention to detail. Hough finds melody in swirling figures that other pianists treat simply as filigree, clarifying the music's texture and intensifying its contrapuntal spirit. This is a highly individual interpretation, to be sure: The music is articulated with plenty of dramatic pauses, hesitations, and accents -- just as a Shakespearean actor might declaim a monologue. Even if one finds fault with such rhythmic liberties, the power and conviction of Hough's interpretation are beyond reproach. By now, Hyperion's engineers are old hands at capturing the pianist's dazzling sound, and this CD -- with an ingenious and generous program that also offers the aptly named Polonaise mélancolique, the First Ballade and the Berceuse -- is a pianophile's feast.
