Liszt: Wild and Crazy

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide

This double CD album features an all-star cast of some of the world's greatest pianists. Asking someone to choose the best pieces on the album is like asking someone to choose his or her favorite child or candy; however, there are a number of pieces that especially stand out on this overall wonderful array of compositions. The dark bass begins "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2" with great majesty, and one can sense that Lang Lang is playing the piano with his whole body. His youthful energy makes the piece sparkle, makes the passages chase ...

All Music Guide
The title of this album, one might argue, could easily describe Liszt's life. Fortunately for listeners, Liszt channeled his fervor and energy into composing virtuosic music for the piano. His youthful energy makes the piece sparkle, makes the passages chase one another. Martha Argerich's "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6" lilts and waltzes; one wants to dance and pause with her perfect rubatos. The all-too-familiar Mendelssohn wedding march is performed here as most people have never heard it done before: Liszt has taken the composition and made it his own, just as Egon Petri has made the piece his own. Petri returns on another Liszt paraphrase, the brilliant "Fantasy on Themes from Mozart's Marriage of Figaro." Rather than plowing through the entire opera, Liszt chose two arias to draw upon, "Non piu andrai" and "Voi che sapete." How the composer takes so little music and fleshes it out is simply genius, and Petri is attuned to each nuance that Liszt desires. Another opera-inspired work, the "Concert Paraphrase on Verdi's Rigoletto" is absolutely heartbreaking because of its deep, tender emotions it evokes in the listener, thanks to Daniel Barenboim. Violinists will recognize "La campanella," originally composed by Paganini, and played beautifully here by Yundi Li. Certainly, there are other wonderful musical moments courtesy of Vladimir Horowitz, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Herbert von Karajan. Liszt would be proud. ~ V. Vasan
