Overview

This book will help teachers solve the dilemma: What does the rest of my class do while I'm working with a small reading group? Debbie Diller offers practical suggestions for over a dozen literacy work stations that link to instruction and make preparation and management easy for teachers. Learn how to set up work stations, how to manage them, and how to keep them going throughout the year.

Each chapter includes:

  • how to introduce each station;
  • materials to include at each station;
  • what to model;
  • how to solve problems;
  • how to differentiate;
  • how to assess and keep students accountable;
  • reflection questions for professional development.

Materials in both English and Spanish are provided in the extensive resource section. Throughout the book the author has included photos of literacy workstations from a variety of classrooms in which she has worked to illustrate the methods discussed in the text.

    Can't enlarge charts to read

    Don't buy it for your Nook. All the charts are in small print and can't be made big enough to read. You are better off buying the book. Same for the other book by Diller.

    Work Stations Can Really Work!

    I am a sixth year teacher. I currently teach kindergarten and have been wanting to move towards a more center-based model, giving students control over their own learning. This book lays it out for you and makes it easy to start and easy to keep going! It gives center ideas that you never really realized could be centers. It offers great, general ideas that fit into any classroom. Philosophies are shared, tips are given, and common teacher concerns are addressed. The only thing I think is missing is addressing/showing readers what lesson plans could or should look like. Overall, it's an excellent read that will make you want to start work stations today!
