Publishers Weekly
Old Badger awakens his little one with a special surprise in Little Badger's Just- About Birthday by Eve Bunting, illus. by LeUyen Pham, the third in the series starring the furry duo. (Apr.) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature
Old Badger tells Little Badger that he was born just about this time of year and so they plan a just-about birthday party to celebrate. Little Badger invites his friends Woodchuck, Crow and Chipmunk. Little Badger and Old Badger set out honey clumps, and nuts and crispy worms for their guests to eat. Chipmunk brings Little Badger a present of a grub, Woodchuck an acorn, and Crow a pale moonstone. When the animals realize that all of them have just-about birthdays, too, the celebration becomes a party for all of them. Little Badger decides that each of his friends should have a present, too, for their just-about birthdays, and everyone goes home with a present. Little Badger even has a gift for Old Badger, who has a just-about birthday, too. A companion to other popular Old Badger and Little Badger stories, including Little Badger, Terror of the Seven Seas, and Can You Do This, Old Badger, this tale of sharing and celebration, though predictable, will hearten young readers, and the warm illustrations create a cozy atmosphere just perfect for sharing with someone special. 2002, Harcourt, Patterson
School Library Journal
PreS-K-Little Badger invites all of his friends to his just-about birthday party. When he discovers that it is everyone's just-about birthday, he sends each of his guests home with one of the presents he received, keeping only Old Badger's gift for himself. The little animal is an appealing character, with childlike attitudes and yet a generosity of spirit that parents will appreciate. The story is simple, yet reflective of nature, as all of the animals were born at the same time of year and the day is not defined as Little Badger's actual birthday. Also, despite the anthropomorphized animals, the gifts are all realistic for a badger: a grub, an acorn, a pinecone, and a stone. The gouache illustrations are rather sweet, yet appealing and colorful, with wonderful backgrounds that put readers right into the woods where the endearing creature lives. The art and story are well married, and the book design is attractive and varied. While not a necessary purchase, this book will find an audience in most libraries, especially where other Little Badger books are popular.-Amy Lilien-Harper, The Ferguson Library, Stamford, CT Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Bunting's Little Badger is as sweet and good as they come, and it is to her credit that the wee beast doesn't dissolve into a saccharine puddle, despite a push in that direction from Pham, who has a fondness for Disneyesque doe eyes and shy glances. Old Badger (Can You Do This, Old Badger?, 2000, etc.) treats Little Badger to a just-about birthday party. Little Badger delivers the invitations (along with those shy glances) to her friends Woodchuck, Crow, and Chipmunk. They appear at the clearing bearing gifts: a chafer grub, a green acorn, and a moonstone. As they sit around chatting and snacking on crimped worms, it is discovered that each of the partygoers is "just about" to have a birthday. Little Badger decides that "each of you must take home one of my presents." And they do, after some minor resistance and an assurance that all Little Badger needs is the big, bristly, dry-as-dirt pine cone given to him by Old Badger-and for Old Badger, the bluebell that Little Badger tucked behind his ear at the party. A thoughtful example of generosity, an unbroken circle of giving and taking, and, when she's not being coy, richly atmospheric illustrations. (Picture book. 3-6)
