Children's Literature - Patrick Hunter
This is a great book for anyone who has an interest in military history, Native American history, or the unbiased story of one of the most familiar battles of the West. Here we are provided with an objective and highly-detailed look at the events that lead up to Custer's Last Stand. These chapters include information about officers and warriors involved in the battle beyond the major players who are typically given center stage in history books. Custer and Sitting Bull share the spotlight with figures like Major Marcus A. Reno, who was largely blamed for the failure of the U. S. Army at Little Bighorn, as well as Two Moon, a Cheyenne who led charges against Major Reno's unit. A timeline of the battle is fleshed out with detail often missing from history books. To provide a fuller picture, Lawson devotes the first few chapters to the events that led up to the Little Big Horn battle as well as the differing concepts of war between the Native Americans and the U. S. Military. The final chapters move beyond the battle to dissect the image of Custer as hero that came to be believed in the years after the battle of Little Bighorn. Instead, Lawson presents the more recent and realistic view of Custer as a flawed man and anti-hero. The only place where the book falls flat is at the very end which seems more like an abrupt stop than any kind of wrap-up to the information presented in the book. Regardless of that, Little Big Horn: Winning the Battle, Losing the War would be an excellent addition to any library or classroom study. Photos and sidebars add to the text.
