From The CriticsReviewer: James M Schipper, MD (Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description: This is a review style book that covers a wide variety of cardiovascular topics in an expanded outline format.
Purpose: By the author's own assertion, this book defies easy description. He states that it is a hodgepodge of facts, guidelines, evidence-based medicine with references, and pearls gleaned from practice. He attempts to provide clinically relevant information on multiple cardiovascular issues in an easily accessible format. This book appears to meet its goal of supplying a user friendly, easily accessible, portable reference.
Audience: It appears to be directed primarily at residents or fellows who have some familiarity with the topics, but may need to refresh their memory or solidify concepts. This book does not replace a textbook, and topics are not covered in sufficient depth for this book to be useful to someone new to clinical practice. The author does not clearly state his intended audience other than a "practitioner" who deals with cardiovascular issues.
Features: This book covers most major areas of cardiology including emergency protocols, major disease processes, cardiovascular testing, and cardiac medications. The author briefly provides information regarding epidemiology, pathophysiology, signs, symptoms, natural history, diagnosis, and treatment. The information is supplied in an easily readable outline format. Discussion is minimal, but this is offset by the numerous evidence-based references which may stimulate further investigation into topics of interest. Multiple charts and illustrations are effectively used to quickly convey information to the reader. Although this is positioned as a pocket book, it is a bit large to carry throughout the day.
Assessment: This book enters the crowded market of pocket reference books. Like many pocket books, it is able convey a large amount of clinically relevant material in a format which can be read quickly. Its numerous references, often lacking in books of this nature, make this one stand out.
