About the Author

After graduating from Harvard Medical School and training in Primary Care Medicine and Public Health before Family Practice existed, Dr. Daniel K. Onion practiced for 10 years in rural Maine, then joined the Maine-Dartmouth Family Practice Residency. After directing that residency for 17 years, Dr. Onion continues to practice and teach students and residents how to be "real docs."

Dr. James Glazer is a Family Physician with a specialty in Sports Medicine. He practices in Freeport, Maine, and he serves as a team physician for the Portland Pirates AHL hockey team and the US Ski team. He is active in Family Medicine research and is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Tufts University Medical School.

Description: Similar to a clinician's collection of relevant data that he or she began accumulating during training, this book is a bulleted list of facts organized according to organ system accompanied by the most salient references available.
Purpose: The purpose is to act as a memory jogger, but only if one knows the diagnosis, since this book presents the important facts associated with the diagnosis. The key is to know what one is researching, because the book is set up in a way that requires readers to have a starting diagnosis. With that caveat in mind, the book does supply relevant references, which are helpful.
Audience: Because of the format, this is a book for experienced clinicians who must understand the way the limited information is presented. In condensing the information, the authors assume readers have a priori understanding of key considerations.
Features: The format is the major consideration of this book, assuming as it does that readers have a diagnosis in mind and some understanding of the disease. In condensing the information for this format, some significant items seem to be overlooked and, therefore, this is not a book for residents in training.
Assessment: This is an abridged reference that may have value as a desk reference, but it has significant limitations for inexperienced clinicians.
