An unusual, imaginative, stimulating, and appealing picture book.
Children's Literature - Jean Boreen
This reissue of Leo Lionni's first book for children certainly shows how ably the four-time Caldecott Honor winner began his career. This story, of blue and yellow and their friendship—a friendship that turns each of them green when they hug for a long time—is simple and charming in its message. Lionni creates magic with his focus on primary colors that are capable of turning into something more. Although blue's parents and yellow's parents are, at first, startled by the change in their children, they, too, find themselves capable of this amazing change when they hug the other child and his parents. The strength of friendship to help all of us understand how we can be changed in positive ways is the ultimate message for all readers. Nothing is lost in this transition to a board book format. This is truly a classic text, and children who have not yet been introduced to it but love other Lionni books will certainly enjoy this one, too. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
