Through this delightful book, readers see the sights and hear the sounds of the big city from the point-of-view of a homely but personable pick-up truck. The author, an award-winning poet, succinctly conveys Little Blue's homespun personality on the first page with "Horn went ‘Beep!'/Engine purred./Friendliest sounds you ever heard." The noises (and the slightly askew rhyme schemes) continue with "Wooeeee" for a police car and "Swish! Swash! Swoosh" for a street sweeper until the city's impatient, self-important cars, buses, and trucks end up "all in a tangle," in the midst of which the mayor's limo coughs and dies. With the simple good will and basic virtues of the country, Little Blue reminds the vehicles that "one at a time/is the way to go" and offers the mayor a ride in the parade. Through spare but vivid text and detailed, evocative illustrations, this sequel to Little Blue Truck not only supplies characters readers will care about, who are, literally, in a jam but also provides important lessons about patience and generosity without being at all didactic. PreS-Gr 1—Little Blue Truck rides in rhyme again, this time carrying crates of lettuce to a metropolitan market. His bug-eyed headlights show appreciation for the city views, as well as discomfort when the faster-paced vehicles harass him. From a double-decker bus to the mayor's limousine, traffic irritably jams into a crunch intensified by the limo engine's demise. The portly, gray-haired mayor uses Little Blue as a podium, instructing citizens to follow the truck's advice to travel "one at a time." The resulting courtesy creates a smooth flow, even when a marching band joins the line. Everyone cheers for the little truck, who leads the way with the mayor as his passenger. McElmurry's gouache scenes are spot-on. Simple compositions in calming indigo and cream in the country starkly contrast with the jam-packed city scenes where a crush of buildings barely shows the sky. The urbanites are a rich mix of ethnicity and purpose: coffee drinkers, construction workers, dog walkers, briefcase carriers, they all pound the pavement. Little Blue is back, here the innocent instigator of a tremendous traffic jam (Little Blue Truck, 2008). While Little Blue is in awe over the size and speed of the city, the sight of such a country bumpkin is too much to bear for many of the self-absorbed city vehicles, who angrily tell Little Blue to "Shove on, Shorty." But in their rush to get somewhere, they forget an important detail that the little truck points out: "You might be fast / and I might be slow, / but one at a time / is the way to go." In the end, Little Blue saves the day for the mayor, untangles the traffic snafu and earns the city vehicles' respect. McElmurry's wonderfully retro gouache illustrations lend personality to each of the vehicles. Readers truly get a sense of movement-the back ends of the vehicles are a streaky blur, while their exhaust pipes spew smoke and the street sweeper fills the page with dust clouds. Still, the let's-all-get-in-line message may well pall with youngsters, if not their teachers. (Picture book. 3-7)

    Fun read!

    My grandson & I enjoy this book immensely! He likes the character of the little blue truck & I enjoy the story & the great way it reads aloud.

    This version does not have audio

    Past review suggested that this book had great audio sounds of various characters within the story, not so. Very unhappy with this version since my grandson enjoys the audio books most of all. I was looking forward to the sounds of cars & trucks that he enjoys. I wouldn't have purchased this knowing that there is no audio!**

    Love Little Blue Truck

    My son is 2 years old and he absolutely loves the Little Blue Truck books. Mama loves em too! :-) They're very colorful and give lots of opportunity to be dramatic.

    Little Blue Truck

    Our favorite book for the moment

    I bought this one for my son who is 7 months old and instead my 3 yo daughter has claimed it as her own. We love to read it together and it's her current favorite. I can imagine that in a few years time, it will also be a favorite of my son's. The graphics are great and the story is cute. Little blue is a great truck!

    Must say first - my son loves The Little Blue Truck. But, this

    Must say first - my son loves The Little Blue Truck. But, this one is not nearly as good as the original. The animal noises are much more interesting and entertaining to him than the all-car cast of Little Blue Truck Leads the Way. But, that being said, still a fantastic book loved by my little guy.

    Little Blue Truck

    My 3 y/o grandson and his 18m old sister love this book..we have read it soooo many times! It is a wonderful story and a very fun read for everyone.
    I have 6 grandkids under 6 and highly recommend this book and we read a LOT of books.
    I'm now purchasing the Little Blue Truck Leads the Way!

    HIGHLY RECOMMEND !!

    I bought both THE LITTLE BLUE TRUCK and THE LITTLE BLUE TRUCK LEADS THE WAY for our 2 1/2 yr old grandson and he absolutely loves both books. He wants them read over and over and over again !! The pictures and the lilting rhyming narrative are so captivating to young eyes and ears. My son, who reads to our grandson at bedtime has the entirety of both books memorized ... and our grandson can be heard repeating lines from the books to his cars and trucks during play. HIGHLY RECOMMEND both books !!!

    highly recommmend

    My grandson who is i year old loves this book. He says truck and gets the book for someone to read to him. This happens every night.
