Overview

Optimized for use on the Nook, when journalist Kim Kavin decided that she wanted a puppy, she did what millions of people do every year: clicked on an online photo and submitted an application. She had no idea that the adorable brindle puppy-advertised as healthy and near her home in New Jersey-was actually a last-minute rescue from a gas-chamber shelter in North Carolina. Blue had arrived in the Northeast with at least a dozen other dogs in an RV that is just one among countless transports whose sponsors are dedicating their efforts to saving dogs by any means possible. Blue was happy and friendly, but he seemed to have endured some unusual albeit unknown ordeal. The dog's manner prompted Kavin to trace his history all the way back to a long row of cages where Blue had been tagged to be put down in just three more days. Little Boy Blue is the true story of one sweet puppy's journey of survival. It's also a shocking exposé that describes a brutal ongoing reality inside some of this country's taxpayer-funded shelters. But Little Boy Blue also tells an inspiring story of the grass-roots rescue network that has exploded across the nation in recent years. Readers will come to know and love a very special dog who now brings smiles to the faces of everyone he meets. From a single click of Kim Kavin's computer mouse, Blue's journey of a lifetime began. This is the story of Little Boy Blue, told with candor and a great deal of love. Readers will see Blue and other foster dogs that have been rescued by Kim Kavin in this book's color photo insert.

    Extremely Depressing!!

I thought this was a book about a little dog that was saved and his adventures... Next thing I'm reading is about gas chambers and animals crying and live dogs and cats being stacked on the dead ones, to also be gassed. I cried and deleted the book... There was no warning about this horrible situation.. I know these situations happen, but I don't want to pick up a book and read about it..False advertising... I should demand my money back... It's so damn depressing!!! I'm only giving it 1 star, because I have to give it something to submit this review... Otherwise, I wouldn't give it any stars...

What a book!!! If you or someone you know has a rescue dog, do you really know the true story? Do you know that they could have come from thousands of miles away, could have been hours away from death in a gas chamber, and were rescued by someone who happened to be at the right place at the right time? This is what happened to the dog in Little Boy Blue. This is a book that will not only appeal to dog lovers, but anyone who even has a bit of heart in them, and also wants to know the truty.
The book is more than a story - it is a sobering report on shelters and homeless pets in America. How the state-funded ones aren't doing their job properly, how a multitude of animal rescue people are trying to get these dogs homes, and how another multitude are devoting their time and money to transport these dogs from places in the rural south to all over so they'll have homes. It's also about the vets and other advocates making spaying and neutering as easy and affordable as possible so the homeless animal population will decrease. It's about the shelters that are doing the right thing, and getting these dogs homes, and the people who are fostering these homeless dogs so they can find new homes easier. It's also about a very smart pet owner that wanted to know more about her new rescue dog, and took the plunge into a world that is so bizarre and frightening, but also inspiring in many ways, and then told us all about it in a fantastic book.

What an eye opening read! I am also a rescue mom. We adopted our boy
Sam a little over a year ago. He also came from a high kill shelter and
was transported to the Northeast. While I knew that high kill shelters
existed, I did not know how they operated until I read Kim's book. I
have to say it has changed my way of thinking when it comes to fostering
dogs. I once thought I would never be able to do it and now there is no
way I could ever say no. Every animal lover needs to read this book!

    A must read!

Brings a ray of hope to shelter animals everywhere by exposing the problems with animal control in this country and offering solutions. Story is shared on a personal level through the author's experiences with her much loved rescue dog Blue which keeps it entertaining. A must read not only for animal lovers but for anyone with an ounce of compassion in their hearts.

I just finished reading this wonderful inspiring book that should be read by anyone who is involved in
rescue or who adopts a pet from a shelter or rescue. Kim wrote a wonderful book about Blue and
her journey to find all the facts related to Blue but found out much more regarding regarding these
dogs and cats down south and those horrible gas chambers down south. I've been involved in rescue
for over 19 years and this is the best book I have read with the facts and is a real reality check. A must read for anyone young or anyone wanting to know the hard facts about why it is so important for people to adopt from a rescue or a shelter. Congratulations Kim, great book. A must read. Love Blue and have never met him, but love him anyway.

Absolutely love this book and after seeing that shot of Blue on

Absolutely love this book and after seeing that shot of Blue on the cover I just couldn't pass it up. It is an eye opening book on the realities of shelters and a lot of what goes on behind the scene that doesn't always make its way to the front page, but its important to understand that this stuff goes on everyday. Very saddening to think that there are so many of these gifts out there that are put down through no fault of their own. Makes me cherish my own furry family members even more. If you love yours and wish to learn a bit more of Blue then getting this is a no brainer.

    Love the book!

I found this book to be very educational. I was not aware of all the animals in shelters and the horrific life some of them have endured and are still living. I am now thinking of donating on a monthly basis to some of the shelters in my area.

Thank you for opening my eyes to a very serious situation.

    Sincerely,
    J

Rescue dogs long journey to safety and homes.

I have a number of other e books at this time so I am not very far in this book, however, I love animals, and have volunteered at animal shelters. I understand what rescue and crossposting for distant pulling an animal is from a bad situation. What I learn from this book is the day to day sacrifices these people make to retreive these dogs, transport them, care for them, then hand them over to the next cartaker and transporter. The stories I have already read are heartwrenching. The rescuers have to rely on their own resources and emotional strength. The dogs temperatement and health can vary greatly.

    recommended

there is much informaionn in the book I was not aware and it made me glad that the only way I have adopted my pets is from the shelters. Pets add so much to our lives it is a pity so many are destroyed for no reason other than not trying to find them a home.

Anyone in animal rescue knows what a heartbreak it is.  This boo

Anyone in animal rescue knows what a heartbreak it is.  This book addresses that, but also talks about what is wonderful about it, and why we continue to do it.  Blue is one of millions of dogs in desperate need.  If only humanity would work harder to save them. This book is wonderful and a highly recommended read to everyone I know.

Didn't really enjoy. Overly simplistic and pat.

I am a humane society volunteer and dog lover. Perhaps the cover was what made me pick up this book, but I just couldn't finish it. I expected much more than what it offered. I wanted to like it!
