Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
A young stowaway in the wise men's caravan sets in motion an original, cumulative Nativity story. After the wise men and many other travelers make their offerings in the starlit stable, the boy humbly steps from the shadows with a treasure that pleases the babe more than any other gift a miniature evergreen, thoughtfully decorated with remnants form the others' gifts. In a graceful design, Speirs combines elements of illuminated texts, and altar pieces and paintings from 15th- and 16th-century Europe. Gold-paint page frames and embellishments throughout give this volume a sumptuous appearance. Ages 4-8. (Dec.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature
A long time ago there was a young boy who helped his father tend the gardens of "three exceedingly learned men, Balthazar, Caspar, and Melchoir." When these men see a bright new star in the sky, they decide to follow it and bring gifts to the newborn king. When the little boy asks if he can go with them, they tell him that not only is he too young for the journey, but he has no gift fit for a king. Nevertheless, he follows them as they meet a goat herder, olive growers, farmers, beekeepers, musicians, and shepherds who all join the journey. No one notices the boy carrying a brown sack until they reach a stable. Each gives the baby a gift, and last to do so is the boy who presents an evergreen, beautifully decorated with items he has gathered along the way. Speirs draws upon the fifteenth and sixteenth century art of Northern Europe, especially that of Pieter Brueghel the Elder, in creating the sumptuous illustrations that accompany this story. The varying landscapes and the ever-growing caravan of ordinary people who join the three Wise Men give plenty to look at and linger over. The text has just the right amount of repetition for reading aloud. Beautiful illuminated manuscripts with touches of gold appear on the pages of text. In addition, each illustration is bordered in gold. The angels, Mary and Jesus have elaborate gold halos, reflective of 16th century art. This beautiful gift book reads aloud nicely and will become a Christmas favorite. 2001, Harry N. Abrams, $16.95. Ages 4 up. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo
