The Little Brute Family

Overview

They eat sand and gravel for breakfast and a stew of sticks and stones for dinner. No one says "please" or "thank you." Instead, they kick and yell and punch and shove. Then one day everything changes, when Baby Brute happens upon "a little wandering lost good feeling in a field of daisies." Children's Literature - Kathleen Karr
Hooray! Compliments of "My Reader"—the new tag for the welcome reissue of classic children's picture books and stories under the guise of early readers—the Little Brute Family is back! How lovely it is for a whole new generation of kids to meet the snaggletooth, snarling, grimacing eaters of sand and gravel porridge. Yuck! Watch the siblings bite and kick, snap and shove. Do they remind you of anyone in your family? Heaven forbid. Then one day Baby Brute finds "a little wandering lost good feeling," and learns to say, "Thank you." Wow. Early readers should love watching everything in the family change from gloom to delight. Why not? Russell Hoban (1925-2011) shows the heart of a poet through simple, but sincere words and story—and Lillian Hoban (1925-1998), his then wife, kept her humorous, charming illustrations perfectly in sync with the text. While it lasted, the ideal professional partnership also produced Bedtime for Frances and its five sequels, among other titles. This particular reissue is rated at Level Two—for readers who still need some support for saying and understanding a few of the story's words. Its sturdy laminated cover also helps to make the book a good buy for parents and early-grade classrooms alike. Reviewer: Kathleen Karr

Loved this book as a child

This was one of my favorite book as a child. I'm so glad to see that it's still in print, so that I can buy it for my nieces and nephews.
