Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The whole concept of composting was new to me as an adult and since it is so important to reuse and recycle, you cannot start the education process too soon. In this board book, very young children learn several things including what the remains of edible fruits and vegetables are called and that they are the correct items to add to a compost pile. When you eat a banana what is left? Lift the almost full-page flap and discover a peel. East a slice of watermelon and what is left? Once again lifting the flap reveals the answer—a rind. All of these items plus grass and leaves are mixed together and "slimy worms do their thing." They create compost to be used in next year's garden which is shown by the young toddler looking at his tomato plants. My only quibble with this really delightful book is the negative reaction to the word "slimy" when referring to the worms. They are critical to composting and those lowly worms deserve some respect. The collage art will make for interesting discussion for those who wish to expand on the text. The book is part of the "Teenie Greenies" series and it is printed on 80% recycled paper with soy ink and water based varnish. Now how green is that? Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
