Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Traci Avalos
Little Critter starts out disappointed because his family cannot afford to buy him the latest, most expensive toys. He is jealous when a new rich boy moves into town with everything he ever wanted. Awed, he goes to the new boy's house and relishes playing with all his cool toys. At the urging of his mother, Little Critter finally invites his new friend over to his more humble home and is surprised to find that this rich boy who seemingly has everything is impressed by the things that Little Critter has that he does not (such as a dog, a little sister, and even chores). Little Critter finally realizes how wonderful his family is and shows them his appreciation with a big hug. This is a fabulous story with a great moral. The pictures are bright and intricate, and children will enjoy searching through them to find the little details. The best part about the book is that it comes with thank-you cards that young readers can use to show appreciation to the people in their life for the little things they do. This is a great title in the "Little Critter" series!

I have a love/hate relationship with Thanksgiving.  I love the food and the family part, and the being thankful to have food for the family part, but I'm not crazy about the history.  The glossy the-Pilgrims-and-Indians-were-friends slant from my elementary school days is just insulting, and the Hey!-Let's-take-your-land-and-give-you-syphillis angle is not any better. So, I've always been hesitant to buy books that center around Thanksgiving.
Thankfully, Just So Thankful is not really about Thanksgiving.  It's about being thankful the other 364 days of the year as well as the one set aside to give thanks.  And that is how it should be.
I probably don't need to point out just how very adorable the illustrations in this book are, but, just in case, the illustrations in this book are very adorable.
