What People Are Saying

Alan Dugan
"John Skoyles' poems are both witty and very serious. He deals with the large contemporary contradictions in a language that is specific, original and bitingly clear. It is no accident that such urgent tensions as religious tensions, family tensions, political tensions and lovers' tensions, are sometimes put in the terms of a prize fight in which the winner and the loser are the same person. Skoyles' poetry is fascinating because he is clear-eyed but passionate, sarcastic but grave, all at the same time. His is an important new voice in American poetry."
